How long did it take for your child to adjust in school...mine cries majority of time

Second week in General Special Ed and my son is still crying. It kills me......
I was franked with his teacher. I said, yed indeed he will have severe tantrums due to his sensory issues, will be loud and disruptive.
As for the other kids who may be CD, MR, Down, Deaf---seem to be adjusted already.
The teacher said to wait for two months, and see. After a month, I may just push on A theraputic Day school just for Autistic Children

Any shared experience..

Thank you for your caring input. It is heartbreaking. Alan is so special that I just worry too much about him. I just have to be strong for his sake, I know. Same with my son, as soon as he sees a familiar playground, he cries. He was never aggressive, but for once last week, he bit me since he did not want to go in the classroom so badly. His Special Ed. Teacher has finally got tired of my questions, compared to your son's teacher now. He tells me he cries for 45 min then good for another. I don't know if he's even truthful. Well, he also said that Alan's endurance is longer.
I will hang in there.......

Thank You and Many Blessings to you and Blake.

I am happy that Blake has a teacher, who goes the extra mile.......There are really good people out there.

Re: How long did it take for your child to adjust in school...mine cries majority of time

Last year, her first year of school, Eleanor screamed almost every day -- starting when we would put on her shoes. I started taking her in late (at their request) so that she could have some quiet time with the teacher while the other kids were at breakfast and morning recess. Just when she adjusted, we had winter break. Back to screaming.

Because of the screaming, she was sent to summer school. No crying or screaming there. But this year, we are in our 4th week of school and for the past 2 days she hasn't cried very much - just a little fussing.

I think that for the first year of school, they need to accomodate him - find ways to make him want to go to school - and don't put him in time out. That's not a way to make him want to go.

Last year the principle and asst prin would also take her out of the room and walk her in the halls to give her sensory breaks. That was at the suggestion of the OT. Maybe you should call the school OT and see if he/she has suggestoins.

Re: How long did it take for your child to adjust in school...mine cries majority of time

Alot of autistic kids suffer from anxiety. My daughter certianly does and it can be really hard for us, her, her classmates and her teachers. There is medication to treat it, it will mellow her out. BUT, before we try that, I want to have a behavior therapist work with her. This weekend the therapist is having her first meeting with us to work on a plan. If this isn't successful, then we will look into meds. I want meds to be the last resort, but am open to them.

Last school year my daughter was miserable from April through June. It was heart breaking, seriously, to see her so unhappy each day. School stresses her out and her teachers are trying other ways to reach her and redirect her behaviors, but, they can only do so much and accepting that was hard. She also can't get past certian things and has meltdowns. She has sensory issues, transitioning issues, extreme fears, etc. If her routine is messed up, watch out, the world is ending! Today was one of those days. From the moment she woke up, until she left school, she was really unhappy.
