Went to school w/Kemp

I went to school w/Kemp today to talk to his OT and the minute we stepped into school and I said I was going to say for an hour with him he acted up so much! He wouldn't walk the hallway,he wouldn't put his back pack in the place he puts it everyday, he wouldn't sit were he was suppose to and when I finally got him to sit he layed. Then at the end of class I talked to the teacher and during this time the teacher took the class to the bathroom and when I got done I walked down there to say bye and he was going nuts in the bathroom but I still said my bye and left and when I picked him up he was haveing another fit. The teacher said that that was the first fit since I left and it was cause the teacher made him hold her hand. I just don't know if this is "normal" autistic behavior. Any comments or just insites is apprecaited. Thank You

Re: Went to school w/Kemp

I had a similar experience with Conner recently. His OT had me sit in on one of his last appointments (usually I stayed in the waiting room). She explained how the warmed up by playing catch with a huge ball (Conner just let it smack him). Then they went to table work and he wouldn't follow directions. He wouldn't try to do the work well. I finally asked if he was always like this, and she said no, never. She was firm and he finally partcipated, but I questioned him about it as we left. I asked him why he acted that way and why he would not listen or try. He told me he was kind of sad because he liked it to just be him and the OT. I don't know if he preferred this out of habit or felt like my presence was an intrusioin, but perhaps your child had similar kinds of emotions.

Re: Went to school w/Kemp

Kids ..... even typically develeping kids save that type of behavior for dear old unconditionally loving MOM. In alot of ways they are not so different. It's just their behaviors are more noticable because when something upsets their routine it throws them and their tantrums are alittle stronger than the typical child. I had one of those days today too. My son carried on while his OT was here and seemed to want to use me as his punching bag. This is a new behavior that is worrying me. He was very angry and just kept hitting me. If I moved, he followed me and just kept hitting me. I left the room and went upstairs and once I was out of sight the behavior stopped. AHHHHH He doesn't do this to anyone else. It's the old " It's okay cause it's MOM" thing and Mom loves me no matter what.

Re: Went to school w/Kemp

That happens to us also. I want to help out in class, but if I do, my daughter will not behave. She wants to hang on me and have me hold her, so it really takes away from her class time. I wish it were easier. I do drop in early to pick her up instead of letting her ride the bus, she loves it. I get to see her in action for a little bit in the door way before I go in. Kids are kids, special needs or not.
