I would think most of you would agree that the one thing we have in common is our children's sensory issues? Maybe I am wrong but it seems that most kids on the spectrum have these type of issues.
My son now 4 is doing great with sensory issues. You wouldn't know he has any.
So I'd like to just share a few things that we do at home to help him.
1) We wrap him in a blanket (call it hot dog) while he is standing or laying down. and have him roll into the blanket and roll out of the blanket.
2) Dad and Me hold a blanket like we are going to fold it and have our son lay in there. Sing and rock the blanket back and forth. This helps with eye contact. He loves the swinging. My child calls this Rock a bye baby. He will bring me a blanket when he wants to do this.
3) We have him lay on his back with his feet up against one of our chest area. We have him push his legs to try and hold us up. He isn't really holding us up, you are but he feels like he is. When he releases his legs he gets a big kiss.
4) When he wakes (if cranky) we gave him pretzels and a quiet spot. We leave him alone to clear his head. Now we don't need to do that as much. He is now waking happy 80% of the time.
5) We allowed him time to play in a sink or some kind of water, rice or sand.
6) while hugging him rub we rub his head or an area he is sensitive to. He will feel safe with the hug and tolerate the other feeling better. At least it works for our son.
7) wrap him in blankets when he is feeling cranky.
8) Let him wear a hat and bring a purse of toys while in the supermarket. He was able to hide his eyes with the baseball hat and had toys to look at and play with at the store. Also, a blanket at times to feel safe in.
These are just some things we did to help. He is not very sensitive at all anymore. And we can be in a noisy supermarket and it isn't so bad anymore.
If he is tired, nothing helps. But well rested, he does well. You know in the past he didn't want anyone sitting next to him. I couldn't get him to sit on my lap and snuggle. He wouldn't let me rub his head. He screamed about his shirt tags. He had lots of tantrums when he would wake up from a nap or in the morning. Every time we went to a party or someone's house he would hide behind a sofa or something. Now, at least for us, this is one less issue we are dealing with. I've said this a million times on this board, play is key. Playing with our son has made a difference. He loves to play chase and hide and seek and ride on Daddy's back.
