My ds is turning three in a few months and is pretty much non-verbal. I was curious to know if there are parents out there that experienced what I am and how are the kids now? How are they communicating now? Are they ever able to truely catch up in terms of language? What intervention did you do. Will my ds ever talk?
my son was also fairly non-verbal at almost 3. i was lucky to get bye-bye or mom out of him. shortly after he turned three, he started to echo (echolalia) and script. that's all we could get out of him. he would come out of his speech sessions saying "i want you to stop repeating me". obviously what his therapist was saying to him. slowly he started to speak a few more words and 2-3 word phrases on his own somewhere around 3.6. it was still very difficult for us because he was still scripting practically everything he heard. sure i wanted him to speak but scripting and echolalia wasn't what i had in mind. then i read somewhere that echolalia could be a very positive step in obtaining functional language. during this time, we implemented an ABA program and they taught me to ignore the scripting and redirect him to something else. fast forward 2 years later...he is now a VERY verbal child and talks constantly. he is amazingly curious about everything around him. i would say the only thing that sets him apart is his inabilty to understand why others arn't as passionate about his interests as he is. he is about to enter kindergarten and is reading on a second grade level (self taught). he also taught himself how to solve simple math problems. good luck.

My ASD daughter is about to turm three (next month) she is very echoic (in the last two weeks) and is strating to understand about answereing and not repeating questions. She has been in ABA since MArch 2006 ( amazing place in Destin) and has improved grately in so many areas but I just want to talk to her. and I worry I will never be able to ,but you gave me hope. thanks
Kedan is 4 and hes starting to become verbal. He lables ALL the time but starting to use words tomeet his needs. He signs also. I dont know that he will ever catch up on things but will improve for sure. Good luck.
