Am I Autistic?

I'm conflicted on whether i have autism or don't. I don't find the online tests adequate and would like an opinion from those who are more familiar with the disorder.

Here are some of the important details:
- When I was born the docs said I wasn't autistic (according to my mother)

- My brother is severely autistic

- My body-language is devoid of any expression usually

- I often rock, stretch and play with objects when I'm bored (I'm rocking my leg and have a pen in my mouth now)

- I perform very poorly socially and have terrible anxiety issues. People see me as "weird".

- My mother told me that I was very obsessive when I was little. I still am to some degree; i have to read lines of books over a lot, I sometimes imagine movie scenes or just scenes where I have to review until it is played out perfectly. My previous behavior included washing my hands constantly, biting my hands, flapping my hands; actually, I still do the latter.

- Often pace around pretending I'm involved in some sort of exciting activity (war, fighting, etc).

- I prefer being alone.

- I was positive on most Asperger's questionnaires, but was negative on most emotion recognition tests.

- In my opinion, I'm very good at predicting other people's emotions, but I suspect that this is just from experience with bullying and abuse.

- I've been in French classes since kindergarten and I barely know any French at all.

- Certain textures bug the hell out of me: carpet surfaces, brushes, etc. I love the smell of fresh paper though.

- I have speech problems.

Well, that's all I can think of for now. I'd like some opinions on what you guys think: this is really frustrating me. I hope I represented both sides well, I keep feeling that I might be biased in my own opinion of myself.

Re: Am I Autistic?

Many of the symptoms you describe would fit within the range of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Keep in mind that it is a spectrum - there is a wide range from very low functioning to very high functioning. You appear to be high functioning. A more important question than are you or are you not autistic or asperger's is how can you best deal with some of the symptoms you have presented so that your life is more comfortable and productive. Again, you seem to have a good grasp on things and probably have learned many ways to interact with the world that work for you, which is good.

I just want to find out why I act the way I do sometimes. Why people constantly treat me the way they do.

Re: Am I Autistic?

Many of the things you describe sound as they fall into the Austism/Asperger's spectrum. Some of the traits also fit OCD, such as repetitive hand washing.

Doesn't OCD itself fit in the spectrum of autistic disorders?
