Advice Needed - Autism Spectrum Message Board

My son has a strange habit. He will not allow himself or anyone around him to have bare feet. He sleeps with his socks on and if I remove them in the night he wakes up and cries until he gets them back on. He insists on everyone wearing slippers to bed. If he wakes up in the night he goes around checking to see if everyone has slippers on he picks up any slippers or shoes nearby and sticks it on peoples feet awakening them. This is done to complete strangers. In the summer I took him to the beach. He went around trying to get people to cover their feet. He tantrums if he does not get his way. I am so tired of explaining his problem especially as some people are so rude. Anyone had any similar problems.

I have similiar experience with my son. He will make someone walk down the steps 200 times if he feels it is not done correctly. He got really upset the other day for my daughter bringing home a secret diary that he forbid from my house--it took him into a fit that resulted in I forbid it being said over 200 times. We have so many rituals that I no longer look at them like that and think they are part of every day living until we are out somewhere and I have to tell someone one--oh yes---I forgot we do this and its not part of your normal life. All I can do for my son it to try to compromise a little bit more each day until that ritual is replaced with something else.

Have you looked into therapy for your child? It' could help them feel at ease maybe.

i do that too
while i am insanley picky with socks, for sensory reasons, and dislike wearing shoes, i must at all times, unless im bathing or swimming, wear socks. i sleep in socks, but also i live in georgia, so if it gets too hot in teh summer, i will only take off scks if i wrap my feet up in my sheets.

i HAVE to wear socks, and peopele around me can NOT have bare feet or i get like 'ew! get your feet away from me thats so gross!"
my boyfreind, i always make him wear socks, he doenst mind much, but he has made jokes about how obsessive i am with socks.
