New theory on the Cause of Autism

Someone emailed me a PDF file that caught my eye. It was a report that was read by the Director of Food Safety for the United Nations, World Health Organization, and its has some interesting revelations. The report was 21 pages long, and talked about the dangers of the food additive Monosodium Glutamate and how it can be linked to problems in people. What surprised me though was the last two pages, the author, a researcher named John Erb, theorizes that the brains of people with Autism are Over-grown, with too many brain cells. He states that MSG, a known brain hyper fuel, could be causing this. There is even a published medical study that proves that too much glutamate can over grow brain cells.

This MSG is in everything from processed food to KFC and all the fast food joints.

What is also interesting is that he has a list of a dozen vaccines that MSG is also in.

Has anyone else heard about this MSG causing autism idea?

My ASD son will be 15 yrs in a month. He was DX'd when he was 4 and the very FIRST thing we did when we started treatment was remove MSG from his diet. Excito toxins some people call them. This would include MSG, food dyes, aspartame, (nutrasweet), and artificial flavors.

He went from a child who could NOT SIT for more than 30 seconds, could not sleep, could not focus, to a kid who was able to attend all day kindergarten (with minimal breaks to jump on a mini-trampoline), he also slept all night for the first time since he was 15 months old. Over the course of the next 10 years we did numerous therapies, diets, supplements. Some helped tremendously, some a waist of money & time, BUT taking the MSG/Excito Toxins out of his system was the BEST THING we ever did for him. When he was 4 every preschool teacher and therapist wanted him on stimulant meds. None of them could believe that a minor diet adjustment was the cause of his sudden calmness, until they gave him Cheetos's and Hi-C RED fruit punch as a snack and saw the transformation right before their eyes. They didn't think I was so nuts, (and cruel to my son for not letting him eat cr@p) when they saw him literally flip out.

Does MSG cause Autism? I can't answer that, BUT it does cause MAJOR hyperactivity in my children, (even the neurologically typical one) THAT IS FOR SURE!!

Re: New theory on the Cause of Autism

Well, there is some reason for the increase in Autism. What is it???

I think it is food additives and toxins that the mother has ingested and passed along to the child in utero. Then the child is born over stimulated by the world around him and then is fed the same crap unknowingly by the mom and dad.

More Autism is not just because we are looking for it, or want to create a new therapy field. It is really out there, just like Sensory Integration Disorder. Kids are now born overly sensitive to everything. it's a sign to us that something is terribly awry in the food industry. why are the bees dying? Explain that one.

Also, steroid use for a baby with lung problems can also affect the developing brain, by speeding it up too much. It takes a long time to calm the brain back down. My grandson had RSV and rec'd extremely serious steroid treatments that saved his life but affected him severly for many months.
He has been in OT and PT since 11 months of age. he is 4 now and is mainstreamed in school and is doing fine. he is an adorable child and so fun to talk to---but things sometimes still get out of whack---Overall, he is a walking miracle. I cannot imagine what he would be like if my daughter had taken a wait-and-see approach like some people said to do...

I think the idea that their brains are overgrown and over stimulated is probably true. But what is the reason? Have we had a mutation in humanity or something and must develop new ways of educating and FEEDING our children? have you noticed that the mildly austistic and SID are extremely smart??? hmmm. what is GOING ON???

My grandson notices so much detail about the world that his older brother ignores. But becasue of therapy, he is learning how to filter out the unneccesary stuff. someday when he is an adult and can decide for himself what is important to zero in on, he may become an artist with an eye for color or musician with a talent for certain instruments.

I thought for a long time that some of the most talented men and women in history had some of these issues. They were able to paint masterpieces or create beautiful music because of their autism and over sensitivy. Their problems allowed them to be antisocial and concentrate completely on one thing....Does anyone agree?

Therapy is a godsend. the kids who are not diagnosed on the spectrum but still exhibit delays or odd behaviors could benefit from diet change. I am so glad to see the previous messages. As a society it is not enough to adequately treat the symptoms with therapy and meds. We have to stop autism from even happening.
