side effects of Ritalin - Autism Spectrum Message Board

We started our 6 y/o son who has autism and ADHD on Ritalin about 6 months ago (he also takes Celexa). We have noticed marked improvements in his attention and focus when he takes Ritalin and a little bigger dose (he's only on 10 mg long acting) would be even better. The issues we are having are difficulty getting to sleep on the higher dose (that was an issue before ritalin, but is worse on it) as well and difficulty transitioning from 5 p.m.-bedtime when it is wearing off. Does anyones kiddo take Ritalin or Focalin (we also tried) and what is your experience with it? It really makes such a difference, but would make even more if we could increase the dose. I have wondered if trying Adderal would make a difference. Also it seems like since we started him on Ritalin, he scratches at his body more...hands, hands in mouth more, legs etc (is this just coincidental, or a possible side effect)?

Any input would be nice.

To help with sleep look into adding Melatonin,

it is a natural substance the body produces in the Pineal Gland, it has been found to be reduced in people with Autism, take a look at the article you find when you search "autism melatonin"

We have tried melatonin in the past, but have found that it seems to interrupt his natural sleep cycle. He may go to sleep quickly, but often wakes for several hours in the middle of the night.

What other stimulants does he ingest? Caffeine, sugar, food dye, and MSG are also all big stimulants for ASD kids. I would recommend limiting any product with any of the above ingredients, with absolutely none after 2:00pm.
