Am I worrying too early? - Autism Spectrum Message Board

I have a 6 month old who will not look at me when i say her name. she seems to react sometimes by smiling but can't tell if it's just that she hears me/. she doesn't look at me when i'm holding her...no eye contact but she will look at me when we play or when she's sitting in the car seat, etc. she doesn't mimic me...never has.

is it too early to worry?

when do babies usually (or should) recognize their names?

Hi,
From what I have read/heard, babies start to look when their name is called around 6 months of age. I would give her little more time but also ask your pediatrician about it. Does she have any other behavior that concern you. My son waved/flapped his hands and feet from two months so that was a flag for me. Pointing is a huge red falg, but I don't think she should be doing that until she's closer to one. Check for sure on milestone charts or your pediatrician. Mimicing/imitation is usually later too.

Keep watching her, checking your milestone charts, and talking to your pediatrician. I think it's a little too early to tell, but it is good to be vigilant and notice what she is doing/not doing.

Also, how are her motor skills? Does she like being on her belly? Try to push herself up or move? My son was very late crawling and walking (22 month walker) and hated being on his belly.

You're doing a great job and chances are she is fine. Keep up the good work! You have a lot of company/support here if you need it.

thanks for the tips.

she is starting to sit up from her tummy, she is very playful and enjoys smiling at people. however, she doesn't turn when i talk or say her name for most of the time. had our 6 month appt with pediatrician today and discussed my worries. she said they have untiil 9 months to learn their name and that her being socialble was a good sign that the dr witnessed herself. i'm hoping this is just me over analyzing things....

one last thing.....do you that have children with autism, remember if they smiled alot when babies?

Glad your visit with the pediatrician went well. It sounds like your daughter is very sociable which is a good sign. My son did smile a good bit when he was younger and liked looking at other people. I would check into her hearing. Maybe she has some fluid in her ears/tubes that could be keeping her from hearing you call her name.

Good luck and keep up the great work! It feels like you have to be some sort of investigative researcher when you have a child, doesn't it?
