Help with Potty Training - Autism Spectrum Message Board

My son is 3 1/2 and we are trying potty training. I wouldn't even push the issue, but he has at times pulled his pull up off and peed on the floor. I did the chart of one week of when he went to the bathroom. NO PATTERN whatsoever. I have the book on training in one day, but I really would like to get some advice from other moms who have actually done this. Please help!! He is verbal/nonverbal. He is beginning to use one/two word phrases. He sits on the potty and says pee pee in potty, but it is not like the connection is there. He will come up to me after he has peed and say pee pee. I am lost at what to do. Any advice, would be great

Our son was potty trained at daycare at 2 (he was at daycare part time until he was diagnosed), but wouldn't potty for us at home. It was only after he was diagnosed that I realized he went at daycare because that was the routine. We struggled with potty training him at home when he was 4 but finally came across this technique... We would take him to the bathroom about every 30 minutes. He would sit facing the tank and we would poor warm water on his penis to stimulate him to go. It worked every time and in about 3 days, he understood that when he sat on the tiolet that he needed to go pee. We faded the water and increased the time between taking him and haven't had accidents since. He is almost 7 now and goes to the bathroom like any boy (standing up even... not seated facing the tank). Hope that helps.

Thank you. I'll try that. I am home during the summer because I am a teacher, so I can work with him more. Did you keep him in pull ups or did you go straight to underwear?

My son sounds very similiar. He was 4 years 2 months when he eventually got to the stage where he can go out without a nappy and has minimal accidents at school. He still does number twos in in pants occasionally and still needs constant reminders, though now his is more often saying he needs to go (4 1/2) at the mo...It was just perseverence and repetition until he finally got it. We got him a step, which helped because he is unsteady on his feet and too scared of heights to sit on the toilet for quite a while. Still he insists on me watching and will not go on his own and i have to clap and make a big deal out of it everytime! lots of praise, reminders, rewards..i am sure u have tried all this! All I can say is it takes time. Don't give up. He still wears a nappy to bed.
