Antibiotics and autism? - Autism Spectrum Message Board

My son is taking the generic brand of Omnicef for his ears. He has fluid/pressure in them and has to get tubes put in. Do some antibiotics cause a child with autism to regress or cause their symptoms to worsen? This seems to happen with my son. Do I take him off the meds or just wait the 10 days until he's done? Any info would help so much! We're going through a really tough time right now! Thank you.

Yes it can cause them to act completely different. My son was on omnicef and amoxicillian and is perfect. If you give him any type of allergy medicine, like Zyrtec or any type of cought medicine he turns into the most hyper child on the planet. (He is very calm normally).

Medicine is just trial and error. After trying two different allergy medicines the doctor told me if his reaction is that bad, he is better off with nothing.

In your case you can not do that, because you need to clear up the fluid. Tell your doctor that your child is having a bad reaction and ask for a high dose bottle of amoxicillian. It tastes like bubblegum and kids love it.

Is your son on a gf/cf diet? I noticed with my son after removing the dairy from his diet whenever he was on amox. he would have a regression. I began to question whether there may be a milk ingredient within the medicine that may have caused this. By the end of the course of the antibiotic he was really off. I never got a direct answer to this but have always suspected. Just a thought.

Some food for thought...... is it the antibiotic or the illness that is causing the regression or change in your child's behavior???? This is something that is very interesting to me and I would love to speak with someone who is involved in Autisim research someday about it.
We see something different in our son. When he is sick, he always gets it full blown (symptoms more severe than any of us), it seems to always develop into an infection of some sort ....high fever and requiring a antibiotic. We see a change in the opposite way. He is clear, speaks like a 30 year old, comprehends very, very well......he behaves... "typical."
Pretty cool huh?
