Is lying a symthom of Autism? or just one of the many ways a child likes to test you? lol

I have a son who is 8 years old and was diagnosed about a year ago with mild Autism. In the last couple of months he has been telling little lies here and there and have tried to explain to him how it is important that he tells the truth when asked certain questions. In what form do you explain to your child that lying is not acceptable and the importance in telling the truth.

Lying is a great thing!!!!!!I know that sounds crazy....but lying is a "typical" behavior for "typically" developing kids! 8 years old is on mark for children to try and test the waters and get away with something they did and lie about it. You can be a little happy about it. A little lie here and there is part of growing up. Congrats

I'm big with social stories with my child. Maybe you could try one?
You can't put up links on this site, but if you use "social stories" for your search I'm sure you could find one or get some ideas on how to write one for him. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Individuals with Asperger's are notoriously honest. We don't see the point in lying, and it makes us feel guilty and pointless when we do so. Aspies feel that the truth is ALWAYS better- even if it will hurt somebody's feelings. Thus, if your son is telling white lies, I'd say that he is well on the way to developing socially appropriate behaviors, so long as the lying doesn't get too out-of-hand. I still don't lie. I don't believe I've ever told a lie to my mother. Now THAT isn't normal...
