Sense of humour - Autism Spectrum Message Board

I'm sure that I've read that autisitic kids don't understand humour. But my little fellow laughs at things he finds funny. He laughs when we play chase.
I think it's rubbish. I really think they can have a sense of humour - maybe different from ours at times, but then...I don't always laugh at the same things that others find funny either.
What do you think?

I am new to the message board so HI!!!!

Hi Dannys MUM... ! I am a student support facilitator in class for kids with moderate to severe developmental delays. Most of my duties include being a "one on one" aid with an autistic child that is included in a kindergarten class room and let me tell you that you are quite right about this...The cast that I am on this year, the child is very funny and often teases us in the class room. He also laughs quite a bit when we say something that makes him laugh. He is a real kick.
Enjoy him... they grow so quickly...

Oh my, I have two with these issues, and they are regular clowns. They have always been very happy. They don't understand a lot of jokes, because they are young, but they know when adults are teasing with them. watching them laugh makes me hurt. And they always ask for more when we tickle them. I don't think we have to worry about there sense of humor.

My Drew is 5 now. He has a wonderful sense of humor. He lost this when he lost his speech. As soon as his therapy started we began to see Drews humor return. He is a happy, laughing little boy. Teasing his family is his favorite thing to do. He laughs so hard at times he cries.
Maybe the children who are severely autistic are still in that world of their own. I don't believe this is so for the majority.

My son is the BIGGEST stinker pie ever! He definitely has a sense of humor, and he does and says things on purpose to get people to laugh. He might not get jokes necessarily, and he does seem to take most things literally.. but he'll call people by different names just to get a laugh, or do the opposite of what you tell him, and wait for you to notice he's just playing. He loves laughing and he often tells me to laugh and things he says. LOL
