Autistic step daughter...

So tonight my husband actually broke down in realizing his 6 yr old is autistic. I think he never wanted to admit it.My step daughter frequently acts out and was recently changed on her meds. We thought this was the break through we had been waiting for but alas she had a bad day at summer camp. The Y is threatening to kick her out because she does not do well with change and they go on weekly field trips and they say they can't handle her. To note K(my step daughter) is autistic spectrum. She talks, plays, and tries to interact with other children as much as she can tolerate.

I am tired of people staring at me wondering what is wrong with my step daughter. I wanna scream,"She is autistic, I am not a bad step mom"!

On top of all this I was recently married in Oct 2007 and we got custody of my husbands kids January 24th. I am completely stressed as we became an instant family.I accept my responsibility as a Mother to my step daughters but it gets tough. My husband and I are needing support.

Re: Autistic step daughter...

Does she get any types of therapies for her autistic issues? My son gets p/t o/t and socializations skills therapy. He 's yet to be diagnosed but I know he has aspergers and he's most likely to be diagnosed very soon. It's very tough I just ignore people because what they think doesn't matter you know you're doing your best. Contact the public school system to get the ball rolling for the therapies she'll need it's slow going but it's worth it. Also read through the threads here there are many people who have had success with diet changes, and supplements. Try to take one step at a time it's very overwhelming at first but there are people out there to help you just have to connect up with the right organization to point you where you need to go next. There are alot of people on the boards in california post a new thread asking for help and info in that state I know everyone will rally to help you.

Until then deep breathes
