My son is 6 years old and has autism and adhd. His doctor has prescribed concerta for his adhd. He will not take his medication, he will hold it in his mouth and not swallow. He takes his other medications (tablet form also) fine but not the concerta. I have tried giving with food, liquids, whatever you can think of. Any suggestions as to how to get my son to take his medication? Is concerta available in another form?

Need help, growing tired Mom
No, concerta is extended release so it can not be chewed, or crushed, See if another medicine would work as well as concerta. Good luck, I'm having problems getting my two year old daughter with autism and dandy walker to take her supplements.
Put the pill inside an empty gelatin capsule, or if he takes other capsules, just open one and stick it in there and reclose. You can also be "tough" and make sure it's swallowed before he gets anything else he wants.

I have a 4 year old son with Autism. He has a problem putting things in his mouth, especially pills. We hide everything in a cup with juice but Concerta is a time released capsule so we were unable to give this med. The doctor said he could use the Daytrana Patch in place of it. It is also time released. Talk with your doctor.
Good luck.
