Autism - savants

Has anyone heard of people who have autism who are savants, masters at a particular art - having special talent? Just curious.

When my son got diagnosed at the age of 4 I belonged to a support group. At the group a parent talked about his 3 year old son. This child was at the severe end of the spectrum. He was refused a place in the local mainstream nursery. His father was fighting to get him into a special nursery. Despite having basically no communication skills and severe behavioural problems the child was able to read, spell and count. Nobody quite knew how he mastered it. But he would sit down and use alphabet blocks to spell out words. Unfortunately I lost touch with the family so I don't know how this boy is doing now.

Re: Autism - savants

I saw a programme last year about savants, they thought there were probably no more than 100 in the world. Not just remarkable at something but really amazing . Like knowing what the weather was like for every day of your life, or being able to tell you what the day of the week it was for any random date for example 24th August 1857. All so incredible but really happen.
