Self Harming teenage autistic son

My son is displaying very agressive behaviour towards himself. He is ripping into various parts of his body until he gets blood. He is not responsible for his behaviour when he is engaged in one of these'explosions'. My son does not have the gift of speech so cannot explain these 'explosions' to us. It is heartbreaking ro watch your own son mutilating himself. I am at my wits end as I cannot seem to get the help he needs. My son has been prescribed risperadone, olanzapine and epilim at different times and different doses, not all together, but nothing has worked. I have even tried secretin injections to no avail. I asked the consultant to give my son a brain scan or even a blood test to identify any hidden 'problems' but he keeps refusing stating they would not help. Can anyone tell me of any new treatments or drugs available that might help my big son , Or even if anyone else is experiencing this sort of problem i'd love to hear from you.

Re: Self Harming teenage autistic son

This must be heartbreaking. Please see a neurologist or psychiatrist that specializes in children with ASD. I have heard that there is treatment for these self abusive behaviors. Call a hospital in your area that you feel comfortable with and ask for a referral for a Dr. who could treat these kinds of behaviors.

Is there anything that usually precedes these kinds of outbursts, or any particular food that he eats before? Look for things that may be happening before the outbursts.

I hope you can find a good referral asap. LEt us know what is happening.

Re: Self Harming teenage autistic son

Hello all.i have a 9 year old son with a diagnosis of autism, Adhd and learning difficuties who self harms and others. The problem we now face is the intensity and frequency of his explosions have increased dramatically in the past few months. He is currently o 3.5mg resperidal daily[1.5 morning & 2mg evening] which is no longer effective.we,ve tried other meds with the resperidone[concerta then clonidine] but they only made things worse. He is now going to be fully assesed by specialists over a 3 months period in hospital,so they can investigate and figure out the most appropriate medicine to prescribe. The situation has become unberable

visha - sorry you're going thru this rough time. for my son it also took time and assessment to get the meds right. sometimes they do stop being effective. risperdal never helped - actually made behaviors worse. zyprexa and depakote are good for him now; he's doing mostly good now. when will the hospital assessment start? you'e doing the right thing.

Hi Mira, the psychiatric evaluation will take place sometime in july[not certain of the exact date].For me it's heart wrentching seeing my child go through such pain, because he is actually regressing in behaviour and retreating into his own world.Anyway,i'm glad your child is now on the right medication and things are now better for him i wish & hope the assesment helps my son too.

To the other mothers in similar situations, please stay strong and wish you all the best.

I know that you may not agree with me on this, but have you ever considered changing your son's diet? I have aspergers and decided to change my diet 9 months ago. ever since then, I have become increasingly more functional; I am much more functional than I was 9 months ago. I had all the characteristic symptoms of aspergers/autism; talking "at" people, freezing in position, self-harming, sensitivity to sound and noise, being socially withdrawn, repeating myself, having rigid schedules and rituals, and tantrums/outbursts. I can now converse with people much better than before, and my "rigidity" has improved greatly. some of my symptoms are still there, as I am not completely cured yet, but my aspergers is not nearly as bad as it used to be. I also have other mental illnesses besides aspergers as well, such as schizophrenia, which has also improved. in fact, all of my conditions have greatly improved overall ever since I changed my diet 9 months ago.

Re: Self Harming teenage autistic son

visha - i hope the eval can be done sooner than later with all the regression. so sad and so painful to see but t think a lot better days are on the horizon. the hosp. stay will probably reveal so much about what's best for treatment. my son was in the hosp. too and this is when everyone - counselors, drs. teaching staff all got on the same page about getting the right help. it was a turning point and i hope for you too, as hard as it will be on you; it's the right way.

I am on a non-dairy, non-gluten, and non-refined sugar diet. I also do not consume anything that is processed. I do not eat meat as well.

Re: Self Harming teenage autistic son

My daughter is doing the same thing and when she goes through these attacks on herself she pulls her hair out at the roots and digs into her neck til she bleeds also and it is very upsetting to see her do this and I can't do anything but try to hold her hands to keep her from doing it til the meltdown pass. She fights even the more when she think you are trying to stop her. I have no clue what to do either but I googled on the internet for autism supplements that may help. I emailed the company to see if their products work with her meds. Hope we both find something soon. All I know how to do right now is pray.

Is he on any other meds or is it just the diazepam and what consultant are you talking about that don't agree when the doctor prescribe it. Thanks for your reply.
