how can I prepare my two and a half year old with traces of autism for a new baby?

My son is two and a half years old and has traces of autism. He is currently still being assessed so it is going to take a while for me to have a final diagnosis. He is very loving and also extremely attached to me. He is also still very dependent on me also doesn't try to eat alone and is also not potty trained. My main concern is trying to prepare him for the new baby. I do try to tell him but he still doesn't really understand whats coming... HELP!

Re: how can I prepare my two and a half year old with traces of autism for a new baby

Hi;

I have a nine year old with autism and had a baby when he was four and again when he was 8. I had a great book for him (being that he is so visual) by Dr Sears called Baby on the Way. It was great because it also teaches you how to taylor the book for individual kids. I got him as involved as I could in everything To be completely honest their was a tough period of adjustment after my the first of his siblings was born. It got worse for awhile before it got better, but it was so worth it and now that i have had another, he was so excited and loves him so very much. Infact he was the first person I called from the hospital to tell him his baby brother was born. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me, oh and for the record my son with autism is very high functioning so I think that helped.

hi - the advice given by gsmom sounds great. i could also add that if you possibly can, to get help so you can spend extra time with your 2 year old since he will probably need you even moreso until he transitions to getting used to the new baby.

good luck to you.

If he has a baby doll have him mimic you taking care of baby. There is really nothing wrong with a boy having a doll. He can take care of his baby while you take care of his new brother or sister. I read some articles about autistic kids having trouble with "copying" peers and parents as a way of learning. It might help your 2 year old to learn copying skills. I think it is called mirror neuron dysfunction. You might want to check it out.
