offical diagnoses, looking ahead...

My son has a offical diagnoses of autism. He has always been in special schools and programs since the age of 4yrs old to meet his needs in school.
He is now 16yrs old. He is verbal, but has cognitive delays. My question is after he turns 18. What then? I am planning on eeping him living at home, however he will need to be in some type of day program to meet his needs.
I am aware that I will have to move to a bigger city , because we currently live in such a small town.
what do other parents do after their child turns adult age? And what are day programs like? I am a single parent and raising him alone. I have no idea what to expect after he reaches adult age. I know that the school has programs until he reaches 22yrs old .
I believe he will also be able to recieve SSI after he turns 18, but I am more concerned abuot his future and meeting his needs as he turn adult age.

Re: offical diagnoses, looking ahead...

It probably is a good idea to think ahead to moving to a larger city that would have more adult division services for your son. You would begin by contacting the office of developmental disabilities in that city and be referred to adult services. They should be able to answer your questions about your planning for your son.
