Potty training when you're Auti is almost 5

Hey everyone! New to the board and forums, but was just wondering how hard it was to potty train your autistic child. My son will be 5 in January and has been potty training lately, however, he's been holding his pee almost for 24 hours a day and I've become concerned since I know potty training can be hard. Has anyone else delt with this and how sis they over come it? The Tutoring instructor made sure she let me know tonight it can be a MAJOR thing and I'm concerned I will be causing other health issues with him. If anyone else out there has had these problems please let me know. My son peed 2x in the potty after watching an Elmo video on dvd and has watched it since, but still hasn't shown any concern into the video. He received ALOT of attention and reenforcement stuff (i.e. Skittles) after peeing in the potty by himself, but since then hasn't had any concern with it. Anyone with help is very well LOVED.

Re: Potty training when you're Auti is almost 5

it sounds like he is in the process of getting used to something very new and different to him. is he drinking enough? make sure he does get enough liquids so he can get the "practice" that he needs. and be aware of course that there will be accidents along the way.

at this point all you can do is continue to reinforce with real favored treats when he does have a success - we did juice boxes and chocolate!! and with enough liquids, he will have to go.

another thing i did was to remind my son constantly about it so it would be in the front of his thoughts. in the beginning i took him to the bathroom every 2 hours. eventually it will happen. GOOD LUCK!
