how do I help wife to ....

cope with her son getting outer. Background:

Her autistic son is my stepson, he is non verbal and also MR. Will have to be cared for all his life. He is physically healthy. He is in his mid 20's and we are in our 50's. Been trying to broach the subject of getting him on the list for a home for him. She refuses to even discuss the subject. The list here in houston is 7 to 10 years long so even if we put him on it now he would be in his 30's before it was time and by then we are in our 60's and getting to the point of not being able to properly care for him. If he goes on the list then he is 7 - 10 years away without people who can properly care for him. How can I get her to even discuss this. She sees all the news stories of abuse and it just freaks her out. I don't know what to do.
