Can a saliva gland blow up?

I was recently diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease, it seems tho that everything is going wrong. tonight when I ate tomato soup, something on the side of my face balled up. It started out with a saliva gland type cramp, them poof, this big lumpy thing was there. I can't figure out why it did that! The swelling went down about half hour later, there is minimal swelling now. Ice? heat? leave it alone?? worry??

Re: Can a saliva gland blow up?changing to its just the disease...

um, I'm not sure what its called, but I think you're right about it being a saliva gland. I asked the specialist about it today and he just said its part of the disease. Boy, do I ever have some research to do!:dizzy::dizzy: he didn't seem at all concerned, didn't even look at it or check me out in any way. I guess when you have fibromyalgia and mixed connective tissue disease they just lump every sympton in one bag and thats it, no reason to ever check me again, cuz why,its just the disease. Hmmp

Re: Can a saliva gland blow up?

Thanx for your reply Jenn. I have to wait to see my family Dr,. next Wed. as I mentioned, that so called specialist who is a Rheumatologist, didn't even examine me. From what I can gather, once you are diagnosed with MCTD, everything gets thrown in the same bag after that and I an never going to get any proper care ever again. Now, everything will be "the disease". I'm sooooo sick of Dr.s out here. It took me several months of suffering before I finally went to the Dr. for help. I found a good family Dr. but of course was referred to the Rh. Dr. and he doesn't nor can care.

Re: Can a saliva gland blow up?

Well, the swelling from the saliva gland went down the other day, but now, every time I eat anything remotely sour - like grapes, I get that intense grab by my saliva glands, or whatever, and then I have extra saliva, and sometimes, it really hurts. Well, I'm trying to avoid anything like that now, but I'm gonna be missin my fruit soon! Is this really as normal with MCTD as the Dr. says??

Just wanted to check in and see if you found out anything about your saliva glands. I also have several autoimmune diseases and recently been having cramping/pain in the glands with the first bites of anything even if it isn't sour. Didn't know if it was something to be concerned about or not. Thanks

Re: Can a saliva gland blow up?

I haven't been able to find anything just yet other than that it is common with MCTD and Scleroderma. Mine too is everything I eat with the first bite being the worst - sometimes it settles down, sometimes it doesnt' and I am forced to stop eating. I can no longer eat things like grapes, lemons, ... the side of my face is still numb too, but being numb, for some reason the indide of my mouth is so painful when I eat. If hot touches the inside of my cheek, or my gums the pain is awful! I don't quite understand that! But then again, I don't really understand this disease either and why it took Dr.s so friggen long to diagnose me! Funny, I asked for pain killers before, couldn't get them, now that I have this new diagnosis, I feel like I could get anything I wanted now. Weird eh! wish the Dr.s would just believe us in the first place!!

Painful swollen glands

:dizzy: I have many lumps in my armpits, groin and neck. Without further investigation the Dr. said it is just the MCTD. But why up in my groin?? Isn't that usually a sign of a different problem? I worry that they are not investigating the lumps or glands. Maybe I need to be on an antibiotic I asked and both the Rh and the Dr. have said no. Sometimes they hurt soo bad, mostly the ones in my arm pits, and my breasts (allbeit quite small) hurt so bad when doing stairs or moving to quickly. The lumps in the groin area, the left side they are huge and very noticible, on the right you can see they are up, but not nearly as bad as the other side. Actually, now that I think of it, the ones under my left arm are worse than the right. But wierdly enough, the pain, pins and needles and freezing from the Raynaud's happens way worse in my right hand! Any suggestions out there how to find relief? Does everyone with MCTD have swollen glands? Trouble with painful saliva glands??

Re: Can a saliva gland blow up?

I had a stone in my parotid salivary gland. Swelled up when I ate, went down gradually about an hour later. Eventually just the smell of food caused swelling. Er did ct scan & found the stone. Referred to an ent surgeon who used a scope to get stone out.

When you mention autoimmune problems, lumps under arms and parotid swelling, Sjogren's comes to mind. Sjogren's Syndrome can cause parotid gland stones/inflammation and increased risk of Lymphoma. Please see an ENT and mention the lumps under arms at same time as parotid swellings. My PCP didn't beleive me about my cheek swelling so I took a sandwich to the ER with my. ER doc thought it was funny. I told him it's pathetic what we are put through (auoimmune patients) to get diagnosis.

Re: Can a saliva gland blow up?

Thanx for the info. I thought I was doing the right thing when I showed the lumps to the Rheumatologist. He just said it is normal to have swollen glands with MCTD. Hmmph! I have even wondered about sjorgens or whatever its called cuz the right side of my face went numb on Christmas eve. I haven't been having so much trouble with my face lately tho - unless I go out into the cold, or in a cold wind. Now when I go to the Rh, all he wants to discuss is anything new~he won't discuss much else it seems. Oh well, I'm used to Dr.s being like that - some of them just don't care. I am so grateful to have a place to unload too! Thank you for everyones comments and support! We will get thru this! :)
Oh, before I forget again, I wanted to ask if anybody out there has trouble with biting their tongue - all too often! In the last 3 months I have bitten my tongue more than in my 45yrs of living! I just don't understand why this is happening! my family Dr said that with scleroderma the skin around the mouth can get tighter and may be the cause, but she hadn't ever heard of that as a symptom. Any info would be great. Thanx! ;)

Well, the problem with my saliva gland just disappeared! The numbness on the side of my face - nearly gone, I still have 1 tooth that feels numb. So, now that I've been there done that with the numbness and the saliva problem, does that mean it won't come back??
