Unhappy Young, healthy female in need of advice. Dry hair, falling out all of a sudden.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to say thank-you for taking the time to read my post- it is greatly appreciated.

I am a young, healthy female with no PMH other than a slight case of anemia about 5 years ago, which I take pre-natal pills for.

Six months ago, my hair became extremely dry (it seemed as though this happened overnight) and began falling out by the hand full. Now, my hair is noticeably thinner and you can see my scalp from the top of my head to the very back and on the sides.

I eat very well, exercise and am not under much stress. Although, I am an RN, so I do work long days, but that has never been a problem for me. I have been to the Dr. many times and they have not been able to diagnose or treat me. My skin and nails are both very healthy and strong.

I don't dye my hair and I use very good shampoos and conditioners. I don't straighten my hair and I wait until my hair is pretty much dry before I blow dry it.

Does anyone out there have any ideas/advice/possibilities for me? Anything will help. It is a hard thing to deal with

Thank you so much!

Re: Young, healthy female in need of advice. Dry hair, falling out all of a sudden.

I'm also going through the same thing except, I've been dealing with this for a few years now, only to have it get worse. I've been to alot of different doctors. I do know though however, that if your hormone levels or off and your testosterone is higher than normal, this can cause hair loss in women. My sister and I both have the hair problem except, mine is a lot worse. I got diagnosed with polcystic ovary syndrome a few months ago and was put on Metformin to help with the side effects but, my hair is still pretty bad. I was my hair every other day now to avoid it getting any more dried out and to also avoid any more of it falling out. I suggest you get a full blood panel done and find out where your thyroid and hormones are at right now. If it isn't that then it could very well be a dermatological disorder. believe it or not, there are many dermatological disorders that can cause the dry hair and scalp, along with hair falling out. alopecia, psoriasis etc. Either way, like I said, get a referral to a dermatolist. Unfortuantely for me, my endocrinologist who diagnosed me with the PCOS, said that there is NO way pcos is the only factor in my hair falling out. I guess usually with pcos, your hair will thin, but it won't necessarily be a dramatic difference. I also know this cause, I've met about 5 different people in the past 2 months, (some of whom were doctors) and their hair was fine. So, that's why I'm seeing an immunologist today. You should also have your primary doctor write you a referral to another specialist. Until then, I recommend you take vitamin D supplements and Biotin. Both can be purchased at any nearby drugstore. Chances are your Vitamin D levels are also low. I hope it all works out for you.

Thank you for the response! I have never been diagnosed with PCOS, however I do get cysts if I am not on birth control and even sometimes get them even when I am on birth control. Is there any way testing to see if you have PCOS? I had my thyroid levels checked about a month ago and the only lab they did was TSH and it was 3.0

Another weird thing that has happened is that my pulse has been dramatically higher- 2 years ago I had a resting pulse rate of 61 and now it is in the high 80's-90's- don't know if that has any significance.

My pulse rate is also alot higher too. They never found a correlation to that either but, as for the PCOS, there are blood tests they give you to figure it out. Usually if certain levels are off with your hormones and thyroid , and an ultrasound of the abdomen is done, then they can get a more definitive diagnosis. But, after being at the immunologist today, she thinks I was falsely diagnosed with PCOS so, I'm not even too sure anymore. I do know though that PCOS does in fact cause hair thinning on the scalp but, it also causes excess hair growth on the body (face, arms, legs etc) and also, can cause severe acne. Aside from cysts and irregular periods, those are the significant and most common side effects. I would recommend an immunologist and a dermatologist though before going anywhere else. They seem to be more familiar with hair loss.

I am on a prednisone taper for AIH and also losing my hair. It has been thinning for the past several weeks. Dr says its not from taper. Help! Have you had bloodwork done?
