Hashimoto's Thyroiditis - Encephalopathy
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (an autoimmune, underactive thyroid disorder) back in 1989. I know I had the disorder long before it was diagnosed, particularly during my 1987 pregnancy. I also developed diabetes during my pregnancy. Although the diabetes never really went away, the doctors thought that it did. Sure enough, by 1990 I was really sick from the diabetes as well.
Here it is 24 years later and I look back and across to the present time and realize I have MANY signs and symptoms of Hashimoto's Encephalopathy, yet I've never been worked up for that differential diagnosis. I've been really pushing and self-advocating, and finally found a doctor in Boston who specializes in neuroendocrine disorders.
If you are familiar with Hashimoto's and/or HE (Hashimoto's encephalopathy) or have the disorder yourself, I would appreciate any information you can share. Specifically, besides an MRI and a spinal tap, what blood/lab tests can be done to either rule this out or diagnose the disease?
Thank you!
