Is this an autoimmunde disorder?? Please help!!

Has anyone on here with an autoimmune disorder had these symptoms? I have been feeling so bad for the past year. I have no health insurance so I have to go through a state funded hospital program and they seem to not want to help. It all started with a sore throat and joint pain and a rash. Had blood drawn and everything was normal except for one liver enzyme test and they said it wasn't anything to worry about. After that I started having pains in my gallbladder or liver and the dr's said it was where my gallbladder is where it is hurting. I got tested for hepatitis and it was negative ( don't shoot up or do anything, used to be a heavy drinker) and my liver enzymes are all normal. My skin is so dry and now I have a b12 deficiency. I have horizontal ridges in my fingernails and it just looks awful. I'm tired most of the time and my knees hurt. I have had a cbc count so many times since all of this and it has been all normal and the dr's think I am a hypocondriac and depressed and just send me on my way and don't care. I keep a yeast infection all the time, I get chills on and off and my hair is so brittle and falls out. I have numerous symptoms and everything is normal. I had an ultrasound on my gallbladder and liver and spleen and it was normal. I don't know what else to do and I have been to four different doctors. Please help!! I asked the last doctor and he looked at me like an idiot when I mentioned autoimmune disorder. I am so frustrated!!!

I don't blame you because an autoimmune disorder may be the culprit. I would ask for a sed rate, CRP, ANA (for lupus) and RF (for rheumatoid arthritis) and urinalysis (for sings of lupus) for starters. Also a thyroid panel with TSH, free T4&3, and thyroid antibodies. That should yield some clues to follow. If you research lupus and autoimmune hypothyroidism, you'll see some matching symptoms to yours. Recurrent mono (EBV) could be a possibility too and can be checked if the first batch yields no answers.

They tested my thyroid a couple times already and it was normal. Does it have to be a more extensive thyroid test and not the basic one they do for a cbc? My urine was all normal also except for a trace of ketones which the dr said was my body is in starvation mode. I don't understand that either because I eat all the time and I forgot to mention that also, I have lost so much weight for no reason, haven't changed my diet or anything!! I do feel like I have mono with my throat, I've had it before 10 years ago and I got tested for that too and it was negative which was weird because I thought that test would always be positive. I will research lupus and autoimmune hypothyroidism and see what it says. Doesn't autoimmune disorders have to run in your family? It doesn't that I know of in mine, only thing is my mother has vitaligo and I think that is an autoimmune disorder. Thank you for your reply

I think you should get a vitamin panel test done .. especially vitamin D and vitamin A .. before jumping to the autoimmune disease conclusion . .

If you are losing weight and had ketones in urine, please be sure a blood glucose (sugar) has been checked to rule out diabetes. I would get a copy of all your labs thus far so you know exactly what tests have been done. You need not have a family history of AI disease to have one, but vitiligo is AI.The thyroid tests you need are the ones mentioned above. They are not part of a routine blood work-up, they are ordered specifically when thyroid problems are suspected.

I have been checked for diabetes as well several times and it has been normal and my blood sugar has been normal. The doctors I see, because I have no insurance, seem not to care and want to help me so I guess I'm going to have to start paying out my pocket again. I would ask for a vitamin panel also but I will have to go to the doctor I pay for to get it checked. What would cause vitamin A and D deficiency? I'll see if the doctor will do a specific thyroid test as well..Thanks again for your replies!

If you are paying out of pocket, try to get all labs done at once, as each time the lab charges a drawing fee, and Drs may charge an interpretation fee each time. I would get the prices for the labs before they are drawn, as some can be quite expensive.

Yes, the doctor I have gone to before usually tells me how much it runs before he gives me the test. I'm just so worried and frustrated with all of this. I didn't know that you would need a specific thyroid test, I just thought if the basic panel was normal then you are fine.

It depends on what was done. You don't have to repeat what was already done, just fill in the gaps. Some Drs only do a TSH for screening. The other 3 would be very helpful, esp the throid antibodies to check for autoimmune thyroid disease.

Thank you so much for your help. I asked for copies of that cbc and liver enzyme check and thyroid and noticed one of my mpv's was elevated and they didn't tell me. Told me everything was normal. I'm taking this paperwork to that other doctor and see if he will help and do the other tests.

I just wanted to get you posted on what is going on with me, I do have lupus. All of my problems were from that..so achillez was wrong on what he said to me and you were right ladybud. It took me a while to finally get a diagnosis. My doctor went ahead and checked me for it because I have raynauds. I am waiting on a specialist to see for it now and it is taking forever.

Sophie, thanks so much for the follow-up. I'm glad you finally got some answers and will be getting some treatment soon as well. You should be starting to feel better in near future. I hope you can find a lupus support group in your area. They can be helpful for learning, sharing and moral support. Keep us posted on your progress and good luck with your new rheumy.

Thank you ladybud (Hugs) I will definitely keep you posted. I am waiting on a Rheumy now, but it is taking a while because I have no insurance and have to go to the medical college here. I am just glad I finally got some answers.

Actually some of the best Drs are associated with the Universities and medical schools. I hope you get a good one!
