Exclamation Fusion 5 years ago, product failure, Optimesh, need similar info

I am a 52 year old female who had my third back surgery aprox 5 years ago. My surgery did not go well, I had to stay in the hospital for 10 days after a one level fusion due to pain and problems with nerves. For almost a year after my surgery I had a fever, severe pain, nerve issues and the beginning of skin problems. I have been to the Mayo clinic twice, 2 teaching hospitals, tons of specialsts due to very large blisters on my body, fevers, being allergic to things I was never allergic to before and now pain and nerve problems that are making my feet and legs slowly go totally numb. After a CT scan 2 weeks ago I met with a neruoserugon who informed me that I had nothing in my back where my surgery was, everything was gone, and was also probably the root of all my issues, he is not the surgeon who preformed the 1st surgery. In this time, I have lost my job, been in contstant horrible pain, taken pain killers daily and am now almost bound to the house becuase i am loosing the feeling on the outside of my feet and legs. I am shocked that this has happened, I have never heard of this and wonder how many of you have either experienced this or are dealing with the same thing yourselves. I am glad to know whats wrong but scared to realize now what I may have to go through. Please if you have anything to say I need to hear it, I feel alone and afraid. Thanks, Robin

Exclamation Failed Spinal Fusion, Optimesh gone from my back, serious auto immune problems.

My name is Robin, I'm 52 and 5 years after a back surgery (my third) I have just found out that where my fusion was, there is nothing holding my spine together. The Optimesh fusion is what I had and now I am doing some research and realizing that the last 5 years of constant hospitalizations, serious infections, serious reactions all may be due to this Optimesh product. I have seen a neurosurgeon this week and he has explained now what may have to be done to repair my back, it is very scary, but as he put it "it can't be any worse then what you have lived with for the last 5 years". This is the first post I have made here and I'm hoping that any of you who know anything about this fusion could please email me, point me in a direction, tell me a story whatever is so appreciated! I know nothing and I feel the need to educate myself on what has happened to me. Thanks for reading this, I look forward to your help. Robin C

Welcome to the board. I am sorry to hear you have had such a trying ordeal connected to your surgery. Could you tell us how long you were under the care of the Doctor who performed the surgery? Did you continue returning to him during the time post surgery when you were having the problems you mentioned in your post?

Did they not do follow up imaging to check on the progress of the fusion? Did they suspect you might be allergic to the materials used in the graft? I don't understand why no one figured out what was happening in five years' time.

I am so sorry about what you are going through, it sounds horrible and like it has impacted your life terribly. What type of follow-up care did receive after the surgery? I know after my fusions I would receive regular CT scans to check the progress. Did your surgeon not do this? I do continue to have severe lumbar issues, but mine are more related to spinal stenosis and I am under continued follow-up care.

At this point I would recommend continue under the care of your current Specialist and it wouldn't hurt to get another opinion about the situation and the recommended treatment. It sounds very serious and as many specialists as you can looking at the situation, will only benefit you.

Please keep us posted on your situation, this is a great place to come for support. While my situation may not be as serious, I do know how limiting back problems become and how it impacts our lives. It becomes very discouraging when it's difficult to move to get out bed and my husband has to help me to the bathroom - so I understand. We give up a lot to these back problems! We are here and and offer support!

Re: Failed Spinal Fusion, Optimesh gone from my back, serious auto immune problems.

Hi Robin,
I tried to email you, but I have to post 5 times before I can email or PM anyone.
I too am going through this same issue, just not as long as you. I am so sorry! I have been dealing with my back since my injury in August of 2014 and my surgery in May of 2015.
I am scared, in horrible pain, and don't see my Surgeon again until next week.
He wasn't able to find out what was used in my first fusion until after my appointment last week which was when he discovered the re-fusion he performed in May of 2016, all of a sudden disappeared, along with surrounding bone.
He was really thinking we were looking at a CT machine error, but then called me the next day with the info on Optimesh.
I do another CT scan on Tuesday next week, but not feeling very optimistic that we will find any bone after reading yours, and other stories.
I am petrified.
If anyone has any information they think will be helpful I would appreciate anything!
Thanks!

Re: Failed Spinal Fusion, Optimesh gone from my back, serious auto immune problems.

After reviewing various literature pertaining to Optimesh, I am surprised it is still being used. I too would be interested in learning what percentage of cases where Optimesh is used in spine surgery are successful. When it fails, I think it is necessary to go back in, remove the effects from the first surgery and then perform a more traditional fusion using rods and pedicle screws.

Re: Failed Spinal Fusion, Optimesh gone from my back, serious auto immune problems.

I did have a 2nd fusion, where the OptiMesh and "bag of bones" was removed in May of 2016. My CT scans were showing good progress with the 2nd fusion, until the last CT scan, all of a sudden all the bone was gone and the bone around my hardware is disappearing also.
Should I start a new thread about this subject?
I see the Surgeon that did my 2nd fusion and discovered the issues on Tuesday, just has been a long weekend worrying about whats coming next.
Thank You!

Yes, it would be a good idea to start your own thread.
