Please I need help!!

I have suffered from back pain for years, however the last couple of years it is getting unbearable, so I started going to my doctors... to make a long story short, I'm 56 and I cannot do anything without horrible pain, the only thing on my MRI IS "normal ware and tare, and arthritis... my only relief is setting, now here's the real problem I went to the doctor yesterday again ... and here's what he told me "the only help I can offer you is to take Cymbalta ( an antidepressant) and go on a all plant based diet" because I'm overweight, I understand that losing weight would help, but why an all plant based diet I don't understand, and has anyone took an antidepressant for back pain?
So if anyone has some advice I would love to hear from you, I'm at a dead end!

Do you take medication for your arthritis? I find it odd your doctor is prescribing antidepressant. A plant based diet could benefit for many reasons. I would certainly recommend dieting and if you have access to a gym where you can maybe ride the bike or do exercises that can help to loosen the joints and even better if they have a sauna or steam room which I find helps me quite a bit. I would also look into the McKenzie method, it's basically self manipulation exercises that can help tremendously. I'm sure you've gone to a chiro but if not you should go and see if that helps.

Many drugs are used for reasons other than for what they were designed. Cymbalta is frequently prescribed for people with back pain.

While the description of normal wear and tear and arthritis sounds like it is minimizing your issues, I imagine what the doctor is describing is degenerative disc disease.

Have you seen a spine specialist? This could be either a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine or neuro surgeon.

One easy thing to try is taking a supplement of curcumin. I would recommend taking a good quality as it is more easily absorbed. It helps with inflammation and may make you more comfortable.

Re: Please I need help!!

Sorry to hear about your pain. I've had lower back pain for years, even though I'm just 27, it was all those years of playing competitive tennis. I tried everything short of surgery, like chiro, PT, acupuncture, etc. It's just frustrating and annoying to be in constant pain. One day my friend told me about SpineZone, a 6-week online program mixing exercises and education. I really recommend this because it actually works! Hopefully this program can help you too.
