i got diskitis following a diskectomy.. it was diagnosed a YEAR after the pain.. it took a year to show up on the endplates of the mri.. i am being treated with iv antibiotics.. vankomycin..

i want to ask anybody, what surgery is the surgical cure for diskitis? will a fusion help? the disk infection doesnt seem to be going with the antibiotics.. i have a deep pain in my disk space.. all cultures are negative.. but diskitis can now be seen on the mri.

Re: post op diskitis

i have had a bone infection and they are hard to get rid of.as for your problem i know it is and isnt an infection. it is cause it eats the disc endplates and isnt cause all the usual tests are negative. vanco is a strong antibotic and i am interested to see if you started at that or worked up to it after other failed to help. i do know of one person who has the exact problem with endplate ostymyolitis. she posts on web md back pain board and goes by the name of little jenn. she dosent post on the weekend but will be there on monday. as for the fusion it theroeticly will help if they remove the disc and all the dead bone.there is a problem with hardware as if they miss some of the infected bone the hardware will harbor the infection cause as u know it dosent have a blood supply to carry the antibiotic. if you continue on the vanco and show no progression and have the fusion with a complete debredment and then keep the vanco for at least 6 more weeks you may be ok. one warning is if you get a fusion i would not let them place any hardware in the disc space cause it wil be very difficult to remove if the infection continued after there is some bone growth around the disc space hardware.i would only let them use bone yours and cadaver but no metel in the disc space. if after a few months and the disc space wont fuse and u have no infection i may let them redo the disc space with hardware. i say this out of experience. i got a majior infection after a interbody fusion.i almost died and the infection continued for almost 3 years off andon with a 12 week cycle of vanco being the one that killed it. if i had to have the cages in the disc space removed it would have been a serious problem that would have needed a specialist and then only to try to save my life as i may haqve been paralysed. so go to ***** and post for little jenn

Re: post op diskitis

hi chrisandclaudia,

ur right, all the tests are negative but yes it eats the endplates. i worked upto the vanko, after a year of paiun.. i still have pain and cant walk comfy after 6 weeks iv vanko, but seem to be getting better..

did u have 12 weeks IV vanko?? man, thats must have been bad.. i have stopped all antibiotics.. since the doc says he can see nwe bone formation.. does this mean that the infection is killed?

i still have the deep disk space pain, does this mean the infection is still there??

last year i had the infection, it seemed to get better with 1 week fortum iv, but it never really went away.. kept paining deep inside.. which is how it is right now as well.. they gave me vanko only after seeing the endplate changes..

i spoke to jenn,..

this infection, will it ever ever go away??? i cant live until it does..

for 2 months my idea of happiness was getting up in the morning and not having to scream in pain..

at least now i am in lesser pain, is this a good sign or is this just "adjustment" of the body with the infection still there?? my doc sees me walking and concludes that i am well on my way to recovery but i am afraid that like last year, the problem will again be only half solved only to resurface yet again with a more severe attack as it did this time..

fusion seems risky.. coz im not debilitated.. just my disk space pains..

shall keep u updated. am walking around 10 mins a day now, ALMOST normally but got lotta pain deeeep inside.

-nikhil
