Exclamation Osteophytes,who would have thought?

Hello all, I had for about three years now what felt like a bruised spine, only hurt after being still, like sitting, anyhow, they told me over and over that it was musculoskeletal, take pain and antiinflam. pills, Today I had an XRay finally and it showed Osteophytes, I havent seen my Dr yet, but was hoping some one could tell a bit about it and what are some treatments,, Thank you in advance for your advice..[IMG]

Osteophytes are bone spurs. Mine are from Osteoarthritis but there are other causes. Generally you don't treat the spurs, instead you treat whatever caused them..like arthritis. You can read about them on this link.

Re: Osteophytes,who would have thought?

Hi Tyvm, I've read that the osteophytes (bone spurs) are brought on when there's been an injury to your spine etc. and your body's trying to heal itself!!
I injured my spine in a car accident, and now have osteophytes beginning to form among many other things!!
Has it only been an x-ray that you had? Have you had an injury like a car accident? If yes, please get your dr to order a more advanced test like a CT scan or MRI!!! The x-rays miss alot!! Take care!

Yep, I had the bruised spine feeling to for a couple of years after I herniated my discs. The disc pain wasn't too bad at times once the bone spurs got so big. I found out when I went in for a discectomy that there was a huge bone growth(s) that had been trapping my nerves and causing all my pain. It was removed and now I'm recovering.
Yours is probably still small if you just have the 'bruised' feeling. I messed my disc up again and I think that is how mine got bigger and bigger. If I pressed on my spine in that area it would pretty much send me through the roof. Then once they got so bad the pain was always there and I couldn't move.
Good luck to ya!
Christina

Re: Osteophytes,who would have thought?

Hi folks. It's taken yrs. to get a Dx on my pain in neck,
shldrs, between blades. Finally, a radiologist was on the
job! I've had 5 MRI's & trips showing films to Neuro's.
Main prob. is multiple spurs at C1 to C5 w/ some bulges.
If found earlier, a PT could've corrected posture & some
prevention stretches. Now they say I need a PT to do
manipulation. Show me how to purchase & use home-
traction, & later do out-patient procedure block in neck.
Anyone know if traction works & how frequent the use?
Yrs. ago I had shldr-PT & helped only as long as I went.
The Block sounds like a possibility later, but I thought it
was just injections. What's all this `go to hospital' stuff?
Is it handy in case they goof? Appreciate any info.
