Post what if in injections don't work

first, thanks for all the responses to the pain management doctors. now i was just wondering if the injections don't work, does the pain management doctor send you back to the neuro-surgeon or do they still work with you to find some other alternate form of therapy to relieve the pain? i also have to see a physiologist(sp?). are they just PT doctors or do they do other things?

thanks again for your help.

Hi Kathy ~

Welcome! I thought I would jump in on this one.......I am pretty sure a PM doctor will work with you on more then the injection. I can't say 100% because I worked with my Neurosurgeon most. I went only to a PM doctor for tests. The Pm did my lumbar and cervical discograms.

After 2 injections, my pain seemed to be gone. It felt like I had a new shoulder. Then the pain came back, I received 3 more injections. The PM dr would have kept giving me injections, he didn't have anymore answers for me. I put a stop to it and went back to my ortho.

In my case, I know what my body is telling me better then what doctors think my body it is supposed to be doing.

Hi! That was the perfect comment! You are 100% right in saying that you know your body better then ANYONE!

You said it all there my friend! I only wish everyone else would think like we do.

Kathy - that's a really good question. That's where I am right now. I think the neuro or ortho advises on what steps to take next. I asked mine if I should repeat the injection series (I think you have to wait 6 months before another series) again. He told me the injections don't cure the problem, just the symptoms, and he felt surgery would be the logical next step. This advice was repeated to me by a 2nd spine dr. It's beem a difficult decision for me - when do you move on from trying to control/tolerate the pain (which is the conservative choice) to actually taking action to correct the problem (surgery)? Everyone says surgery should be the last choice. I am sick of the pain, so I am going for it. Your case may be different. Good luck.

kATHY,
I have had a total of 8 shots to relieve the pain. To be honest I think the shots were a waste of time, that did not fix the problem. W/C sends you for these silly shots. I hope they work for you though.

Hi,
So sorry for everything that you are going through! Those darn injections were just a killer for me!! i would have 10 discograms before i have another cortizone injection. After my first (and thankfully my last) injection didn't do me any good (but did make me much worse) they scheduled me for surgery the next day. I have heard that for some people another injection does help them out. Best of luck, and i wish you many pain free moments!!

God Bless
Alison

Quite frankly, I am a little scared of the steroid injections. I had one in my hip for bursitis last year, and the pain was soooo bad that I nearly passed out. I can't imagine going through that again, and especially not in my neck, and yes, they used local anesthesia. I got about 6 hours of relief, until the Marcaine wore off, and then I was back in the same boat.

I go see the NS for the first time tomorrow. Wish me luck,

HI, EmtShirl -
Thanks so much for your support. I have decided on a microendoscopic discectomy (MED) which I hope will be done the 1st week of Feb. I am waiting for news from my insurance, workers' comp. etc.
I have seen your posts and I know that you are one of the Wise Ones on this board. Thank you for your good wishes!

Hi All,

Good luck to all of you on your upcoming surgeries

I will keep each of you in my thoughts and prayers

Be Well,

Two level laminectomy fusion L5-S1 & L2-3 done on 12/6/02.
Fifteen inch scar from the very top of butt crack (sorry), to the bra line.
BAK cages, rods & screws.(Titanium)
My pelvic bone was used for grafting.
Praying that the other two discs in between, won't have to be fused later, as I was told it was a possibility, due to the other two discs in between, not being in that great of shape.
Doc didn't want to fuse four levels, unless it is really necessary.
I would hate to repeat the surgery, as the recovery period, is so very painful.
I also have a free fragment in my T11-12 area, that I'm still refusing surgery for, at this point in time.
That surgery is way too dangerous for me to consider, until if affects my being able to walk.
