Tense neck and upper back. Accupuncture?

Really not to sure if I am posting in the right section of the board. Anyways for the past year I have had what I feel is really tense muscles. My upperback around shoulders and especially back of the neck always feels stiff and tense. I rarely ever get headaches though.

I have been playing drums for a few years and am sure this is a contributing factor to my discomfort.

The feeling/tension gets worse when I am in social/uncomfortable situations and hardly feel relaxed. This could be social anxiety....not sure. If I am laying back on a nice couch with a pillow supporting my head and watching the television I feel fine but walikin around etc I just feel TENSE and don't move or turn my head as much as I would do normally.....or so I feel. I am just really stiff and not as fluid or expressive with my body as I used to be.

If there is a car horn or loud noise that goes off or a child screaming the whole back of my neck and shoulders just tense up and tighten up suddenly....I guess kinda like flinching. Could be another sign of social anxiety....not to sure...I just no my muscles are tense!

I have had massages for my back and neck aswell as going to a chiropracter once in a while for a lower back injury I had years ago. I get him to crack my neck though. When I went to the massuse she wouldn't give me a 'YES your neck is really definetely tense' but more of a 'Yes it's quite tense' and didn't seem concerned. This was some time ago however.

So I was wondering if possibly accupuncture could be a helping aid in relieving some of the tension?

What would you suggest or am I nuts?

Peace.

PS. ROCK ON!

Re: Tense neck and upper back. Accupuncture?

In my limited understanding of accupuncture, I would think this treatment would be better suited to nerve pain, not muscle spasms, which thats what it sounds like you have. If the massage was not effective to relieve your symptoms, I'd try a different masseuse. It sounds like mostly muscle sprain and spasms, but if it persists for more than 2-3 months with no relief, I would be evaluated by an orthopedic specialist.
Good luck!
