I am in 25 years old and live in NYC, i am an administrator for a major organization. About 3 years ago I had a car accident wich causes L5/S1 to herniate, at the time I did nothing about it b/c i actually felt fine, so I continued a very active lifestyle which consisted of heavy exircising, skiing and snowboarding. In june 2002 i went on a really long car trip and when I returned from i basically could not walk, it honestly hurt to even walk forward next thing i knew i am in an emergency room being told that my herniation has started to rupture and that the herniation was pressing on my nerves which is why i could not even walk...The Doctors at the time did a discetomy and after 3 or 6 months i felt great. Needless to say feeling great lasted for about a year...and then all the pain started to come back again first back pain and then leg pan..and the extreme pain that shoots down my legs that stop me from walking from time to time. My doctor and I have tried everything under the sun, PT, chiropractors, accupuncture, you name it i have had it.
Earlier this spring he did an MRI that showed that the disc had re herniated and again was pressing on my nerves..so he sends me to visit a spinal surgeon to see if I can be eligible for ADR...when i see the spine surgeon he makes me have a discography which shows not only the problems on L5/S1 but that L4-5 is in even worse shape than the other discs and that all of my problems are coming from mostly from this discs. Did I also mention that i have scar tissue...
Upon reading the report the Spine Surgeon said he would not do ADR b/c he will not do it on 2 discs and that my option was fusion. Went to get another opinion with a very renowned specialist here in NYC and he concured.
My Doctors and my chiropractor have been in constant communication and everyone agrees that i have to have a fusion b/c its the only thing that can be done.
As far as the new pain is concern...the only thing i could have done to agrivate the disc was be on a place for 4 hours each way ( but i got up and wlaked every 20 minutes...dr. gave me a medical note ) and the most strainig activity i did on vacation was snorkel. and to answer your other question my bowel movements are fine. I just dont now what the new pain is b/c i have never felt this type of pain before.
