Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

I'm 28-years old, live in Texas. I have a 5-year-old son and 12-year-old stepdaughter. I am taking 3 Advil every 4 to 6 hours. I am trying to go through UTMB to get some help, but it will still cost me $765 per MRI. The say I need about 3 to do the entire spine.

I don't know what else to do. I can't work because I'm hurting and I lose feeling in my left leg and feet. Anyone have any advice for me? I wish I could find a good Orthopedic surgeon that would see me Pro bono! Probably won't have much luck at that

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

Sorry to hear you're in so much pain. Have you applied for Medicaid or Disability? I would think that since you're not working and you have dependants, you would be eligible. Those are the only options I can think of.

Good luck,

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

Why do they need to see the entire spine?

Doctors can't refuse to treat you if you have no insurance. Is there a county hospital nearby?

What is your initial prognosis? Who is referring you for an MRI?

You might try the orthopedic clinic at a local teaching hospital.

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

you need to go to a community hospital. they cant turn you down also medicaide is the best way to go, but look for at least 2 to 3 months before they approve you. they aproved my children in 3 wks and im 2 1/2 months still waiting for me. but its well worth the wait. disability also you might want to try but be prepaired to fight for it. it doesnt come easy. usally if you can walk, talk, and are not blind you usally have to fight arm and tooth to get it. but yet your state may be different. i pray it is. my prayer is with you as well as God. chin up honey there is a silver lining at the end

My husband makes too much. I guess they think he should have the insurance but it is $200 A WEEK with his work. Isn't that ridiculous?

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

My doctor is referring the MRI. I took myself to Galveston UTMB emergency room, they wouldn't do anything there and referred me to an Orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon won't see me until I have the MRI done! Go figure! My doctor is now sending another referral just for the lower part of my back.

UTMB is suppose to be a teaching hospital. But it takes the act of congress to get in there and then you only get a discount off of the procedures!

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

$200 a week for insurance is high, but when you look at it in comparison......

You only get one body.

Usually, that is the way that it works, you need the tests for the ortho to look at. It is better to have a primary order them as a primary is cheaper per visit. Specialists charge money just to talk to you. Do you have a primary? Emergency rooms never order MRI's unless you are incapacitated. They look at back patients and tell them to call their primary. Unfortuanatley, Headaches and backaches are the number one complaint in an ER. Basically, there is nothing that they can do for you there but charge you money to tell you to go back to your primary.

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

hi kendrick0308 -

If you have to pick just one MRI, I'd ask for lumbar. All nerves in the leg branch from the spine in the lumbar region, so that's by far the best bet for you.

Texas is considered an underserved state related to health providers, but I don't know if that helps you at all.

Good luck.

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

HI KENDRICK0308,

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU. I AM ONLY 32 A MOTHER OF 3 TEENS. MINE ALL STARTED IN 2002 WHEN I SLIPPED ON A SNOW COVERED PIPE AND WENT FLYING DOWN THE STAIRS. I WAS IN SO MUCH PAIN NO PAIN MEDICATION WOULD TOUCH IT. I FINALLY HAD SURGERY 5 MONTHS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I COULD NOT STAND UP STRAIGHT BY THE TIME I HAD SURGERY. EVERYDAY THAT WENT BY IT JUST GOT WORSE. I FELT SO MUCH BETTER AFTER SURGERY.
IT IS 2007 AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE AGAIN SINCE AUGUST OF 2006. I HAVE NO INSURANCE! MY FAMILY DOCTOR IS GREAT. ALL THE OTHER DOCTORS ARE A PAIN IN THE U KNOW WHAT. I JUST KNOW THE LONGER IT TAKES TO GET SOMETHING DONE THE WORSE IT GETS. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET SOMETHING DONE. I HAVE A SURGERY BILL OF OVER 40,000 AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS OTHER TEST. I HAVE HAD 4 MRI. I HAVE THOUSANDS OF BILLS AND NO ONE WANTS TO HELP. BELIEVE ME. NO ANSWERS FROM THE DOCTORS WETHER OR NOT IT WILL KEEP HAPPENING OR IF IT WILL GET BETTER.
I HAVE APPLIED FOR DISABILITY 3 TIMES AND HAVE BEEN DENIED ALL 3 TIMES. THEY TOLD ME AS SOON AS I WAS NO LONGER WORKING TO CONTACT THEM. I HAVE 3 TEENS AND I HAVE TO WORK TO PAY BILLS AND KEEP UP WITH SCHOOL STUFF. I HAVE BEEN SO FUSTERATED OVER THE WHOLE THING. I WOULD JUST ONCE LIKE A STRAIGHT ANSWER FROM THE DOCTORS.
I HAD A RECENT INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED THE OTHER DAY TO ME. MY REGULAR DOCTOR REFERED ME TO A NUEROLOGIST FOR MY BACK. I WENT TO THE APPOINTMENT BUT THEY DENIED TO SEE ME BECAUSE I HAD NO INSURANCE. I DROVE OVER AN HOUR FOR THE APPOINTMENT. THEY DID NOT ASK WHEN THE DOCTOR MADE THE APPOINTMENT OR ASKED. DID NOT BOTHER TO CALL AND ASK ME. THEY HAD ME FILL OUT ALL THE PAPER WORK AND THEN TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT SEE ME. I WAS FLAMING. I TOLD THE LADY I WANTED MY MRI PICTURES AND A COPY OF THE PAPER WORK AND SHE SAID YOU CAN LEAVE THEM HERE FOR WHEN YOU COME BACK I SAID NO! I WILL NOT EVER COME BACK HERE WHETHER I WAS DYING OR NOT. AS I WAS WALKING TO THE DOOR I SAID PLACES AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU GUYS ARE WHY PEOPLE GIVE UP HOPE!!!! I SAT IN THE PARKING GARAGE FOR 20 MINS. CRYING.
SO, AS I TELL YOU MY STORY I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL AND I'M SORRY. PEOPLE OR DOCTORS DO NOT RELIAZE SOME PEOPLE HAVE HOPE. I HAD A LOT OF HOPE OF GETTING BETTER UNTIL THIS HAPPENED. I THOUGHT MAYBE I WOULD GET SOME REAL ANSWERS IF IT WAS GOING TO GET BETTER OR
KEEP HAPPENING. HAVE HOPE. KEEP TRYING. APPLY FOR DISABILITY AND KEEP APPEALING IT.ALSO, IT IS VERY HARD TO GET DISABILITY FOR BACK BUT VERY EASY TO GET IT FOR MENTAL PROBLEMS. I KNOW A GIRL THAT STARTED OUT WITH HER BACK THEN CHANGED IT TO MENTAL PROBLEMS AND GOT IT RIGHT AWAY. IT IS NO PICNIC BUT SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE SOONER OR LATER.
TAKE CARE AND HOPE YOU GET BETTER AND GET ANSWERS. KEEP WITH THE UPDATE ON YOUR BACK. I'M VERY SORRY AND KNOW THE PAIN YOU ARE GOING THREW..

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

You have so much on your plate and having kids makes it even harder for you... So sad that Medical field is a business. I understand that Dr-s go to school, they pay big bills, their insurances so high - but something is missing here, something is not right!! I believe that it takes very thick skin for one not to see a patient in pain just because they don't have insurance... Ohhhh!

How about Medicade? How about Family and Children Services? Can they be helpful if you explain your situation? Do whatever it takes to help yourselves; i see on TV stories when people with health issues were in financial crises and how they got help from local organizations, churches, etc. Please, knock in a doors, you intitle since you are responsible parents and your kids need you healthy!
Best of luck to you, guys; I really hope you will be able to find a way to leave all this hard time behind you and get help.

Re: Sciatia Pain and No Insurance

Well first of all. If you haven't been treated at all for your spine, DON'T or you will be considered uninsurable on that part if you get a new insurance.

Now if you do have insurance, you need to use it.

If you can't, and can't work. What I did was this, my doctor wrote me a letter saying my diagnosis and I needed surgery and I was unable to sit, stand lift etc or work that basically I needed to lay down constantly. With this letter, I applied for social security. Then I went to the family services place and applied for medicaid and was approved, this is the one that goes off medical need not your income.

However it is very hard to get and was a miracle, and i had already spent 10,000 probably on tests and opinions that I couldn't do anything with, with no insurance.

If you can get private insurance to cover your back, I would. If you do get medicaid then you are stuck trying to find a surgeon, and its pretty slim pickings and they see so many people your a number.

But, if you can get good insurance..you really need to.

I also agree you don't need an MRI of your whole spine.

Lumbar is all I've ever had.

Teaching hospitals could be an alternative where they go off of your income and you can make payments.

Best of luck tgo you
