Re: Looking for Anular Tear(HIZ) Success Story

Hi -

My annular tear was an L3-L4...is that close enough? I've heard quite a few have had poor results from an IDET, but I haven't felt my disc in the 3 weeks since the procedure. So far, so good is my motto for now (even though wearing the corset and having to stand for 2 months is not fun).

IDET isn't covered by insurance, and it runs around $10,000 (that's a tight one, I know). But, it's one of several non-operative procedures available that you could at least research before you decide. If you have surgery, whether it's fusion or artificial disc replacement, you can't get it back. That was the driving force behind my decision.

I would recommend visiting my surgeon's website. Even though they're in DC, they have really good information on their website, including all the possible procedures in some detail. It's the Virginia Spine Institute. That could give the foundation you need for additional research, if necessary.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your reply and it seems like yours is quite a match with mine.
what grade was your tear and what was your symtoms as far as pain. How much pain were you in? How long have you had the tear for and what have you done to try to treat it before IDET.

Re: Looking for Anular Tear(HIZ) Success Story

I was at a 9-10 on the pain scale, and had tried EVERYTHING for years. I had a riding accident 5/20/2000, and started visiting doctors to get this fixed by 6/9/2000. Well over 4 years. I've had days where I couldn't stand...I would have to crawl in order to move.

In addition to the tear, I've had SI Joint pain (now the IDET is done, I'll be able to ID if it was from the tear or separate) and a pinched nerve (not radiating - separate). These are the 3 problems I've had since the accident. Talk about a pain in the butt!!

Rather than inundate you with all the options I'd tried, I'm going to attach my signature so you can see the list. I've been unable to be active for 4 years, and it's aged me prematurely. I had basically exhausted all non-op options, with the exception of an IDET or just taking meds the rest of my life, so it was that or surgery.

Here's my list:
Accident 5/20/2000
PT 2000, 2001, 2002
MRIs 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004
Sciatica/Piriformis Pinching Nerve Diagnosed 3/19/2001
Steroid Injections (Piriformis, SI, Epidural) 2001, 2003, 2004
Accupuncture 2001, 2002
Chiropractic 2002
Discography 2003
Disc Fissure Diagnosed 8/4/2003
IDET 07/23/2004

Fun, huh???

Wow! You are amazing..
To cope with that pain for for years. I know how back pain can age us prematurely. I hate that. It seems like i gained 3 years in one year of back pain. So much for letting time heal the tear. Dont know what to say about yours other than you know you have tried everything. Maybe waiting is a good thing for there maybe better surgery comming up. Although i hear alot of successes about fusion, the long term might be bad huh? There is a wrestler in the Olympics that is comming up and he had a fusion done right away and is back to compete in 04 Olympics after about 6 months of recovery. now that is crazy although he prob end up with more prob in the future. Im hoping to wait out my tear and give another 6 months.

anyway im glad to find someone with similar prob. Hang in there! what kind of ride was the accident?

Re: Looking for Anular Tear(HIZ) Success Story

Horseback riding. Not fun, especially when it occurred 1 month after my wedding.

My bets right now are on the IDET, so hopefully I won't have to consider surgery!

I don't know what I'd have done if I didn't have my husband and family...they've been so supportive. I just hope this board provides some small comfort for those who have nobody. I know that even with the support, this board has helped because I get to talk to people who REALLY understand.

Thanks for your support...it really is appreciated, 'cause I don't always feel I've handled it, but I guess I have.

Goodnight!
