I am 7 days post op from micro-d and already walking a mile a day. When should I start back strengthening programs i.e., stretching, stabilization, sit ups etc. Any insight on a good regimen is appreciated. By the way, the surgery is not bad! Could walk day 1. Walk a mile day 3 or 4!
hi boot: easy does it. i would stay at the mile every day for a few weeks but keep walking it regularly. my docs told me to do very little except walk for the first month after my microdiscectomy, not to sit for more than 5 minutes at a time without getting up and giving the spine a rest, and to rest the back often (especially on your side with a pillow between your legs). after a month was up and i was still doing well, the surgeon sent me to p.t., where i learned exercises to stretch and strengthen mostly my abdominal muscles and my legs -- and how to bend, lift, and so forth. it was very, very helpful. now i walk 2-3 miles a day and do the p.t. exercises every day at home. this has worked well for me, and i hope something in my experience helps guide you.
i have a funky antiques shop. i started fooling around out there and carrying lightweight stuff around after about two weeks. didn't re-open until almost two months after surgery, and very gradually increased how much i did and how much i lifted. i don't try heavy-duty things anymore, but the rest is working out fine. my surgery was in early march '04. best of luck to you!
p.s.: boot, i FELT like i could do a lot more than i did early on -- but doc and p.t. convinced me that would be unwise, as the risk of reherniation is not small, especially during the first year. so i took it slower than my body wanted to. i suggest you do the same, as a precaution. prior to surgery my life was a horror show, and if i can avoid it i hope never to repeat the experience again. i'm sure you feel the same!
