For those of you who have had them:
I had a partial at L5-S1 in 2002. My new MRI shows that not only is the L5-S1 bulging again but L4-5 too. My question is how many times can they "shave" off part of a disc before they would have to remove it all together? I am jumping the gun assuming that I would have sx again, but it is a question I have been wondering about.
I am 5 weeks post op, and am going to the Dr again tomorrow... I do not see much of a difference in my back yet, but am unsure if I have re-herniated again or not. Needless to say, I would imagine it depends on how badly you were herniated the first time and how much they took out.
I am amazed at these recurrences. I have had a previous L5/S1 microdiscectomy which on MRI is looking fine. I've just had a L4/L5 discectomy plus hemilaminectomy and have normal feeling in my foot for the first time in 8 years. Stiil sore and bruised tho.
A properly done microdiscectomy should have a low recurrence rate
I screwed myself by returning to the work that caused the injury in the first place. I fully believe that if I had not done that, I wouldn't have all these problems now. I should by all intent and purposes be a success story. Finally though, the lesson is learned and I will not be returning to that work. Makes me sad, but gotta do what is best for me
