I as well have the same problems, but it also radiates to BOTH knees. I have told the doctors this now for a while, but they will not acknowledge that the knee problems are connected to the back.

If anyone has any insight on this, I would love to know as well !!

I had the same pain & it did come from a herniated disc in my back. It went across my hip, down my thigh to my knee, others can have pain all the way to the foot & also numbness.

Do not go to a chiro for this. I did & they made it much worse. I went thru McKenzie physical therapy & did not have to have surgery, this is over 4 years ago now.

so it is possible that your back can have really bad effects on your knees, like swelling and sharp pains near the front of the knee caps...??

cbennett, yes your back can affect the legs, knees & all the way to the foot. My pain from a herniated disc went from my back, across the hip, down the thigh & to my knee. My knee would swell up & be hot & you could feel the nerve just burning in the knee.

I had the same problem. My pain was exactly in the same place. But it was "referred" pain. I had several problems; slight spondylolisthesis at L5, hyperlordosis in the lower lumbar, scoliosis, and bulging disc at L4/5.

I completely tore my ACL ligament in my knee in February, but thankfully the knees have not been a problem, although I had pain shoot done the outside of my thighs and sometimes down to my calf.

I had a 2 level fusion from L4 to S1. It was a posterior and anterior approach, with cadaever bone instead of cages. 6 pedicle screws and 2 rods.

I'm 6 weeks post op, and no more pain where I used to have it. I'm doing really great! The only pain I have is soreness where they had to move my back muscles with retractors during surgery. I'm a 44 yo female.

I too am in LA, and can recommend my ortho, he's one of the best here if you are interested.

Don't go to a chiropractor, everyone's right, they can make it worse. You need and MRI to find out what's going on first.

Good luck to you,
Julie

Get if evaluated by a spine specialist. McKenzie may help, but it can also make it worse--it depends on your specific situation.
