Believe my son has Dowager's Hump..help

Hello to all,
My son is almost 14 years old. He has always been very big for his age...right now he weighs 230 lbs and is 5'9" tall,,and still growing!! My family members and I have noticed when he bends over or even sits that he has a hump come up out of his upper back. He also complains of pain there once in a while. I am worried he may have something seriously wrong with his back,,possibly a dowagers hump. Has anyone heard of this happening to a young person at all? Everything I have read is about it happening to older people. I would really appreciate advice or stories from you. He has an appointment to see a chiro in a few days to see what it may be. Thanks to all for replys!! Tina

Re: Believe my son has Dowager's Hump..help

Dear Tina,
I sounds like your son has a form of scoliosis called Khyphosis. Get him to an orthopeadic surgeon before he stops growing. The best results, with and without surgery happen before growing stops. Don't delay.

I've suffered from scoliosis my whole life and wish my parents had done something before I stopped growing. I had my first surgery at 22. And just had another 5 weeks ago at the age of 44. I'm a mom of a 6 yo daughter, and I'm going to watch her back like a hawk.

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask me. I'd be happy to recommend doctors if you're in the LA area.
Good luck to you.
Take Care.
Julie

I agree with Julie. I had/have scoliosis and hyper kyphosis and had surgery for it also when I was 17. When I bent over, My back would 'hump up'. I wished it was caught sooner but it wasn't. I would suggest getting him to a spine specialist also.

Good luck to you and your son,
Christina

Re: Believe my son has Dowager's Hump..help

Thanks so much for your input! I took him to a chiro, did xrays,,the chiro said
nothing seriously wrong,,,he called it a sublaxation...and said he may need
adjustments to correct it. and that if we didnt do adjustments now, when he gets older, he will have back problems...does this sound right to you? I am so confused about what to do..this chiro is supposed to be very very good..i will do more research on the kyphosis or whatever it is..THANKS so much!!!!!!
I will keep you posted! Tina

Re: Believe my son has Dowager's Hump..help

Tina,
Some chiro's are great, and nothing against them, but I would still have an orthopeadic surgeon who specializes in scoliosis look at him. He might agree with your chiro. But if it were my kid, and knowing what I do about scoliosis, I wouldn't feel comfortable until I got an OK from an ortho. It certainly can't hurt, and it might help

Good luck to you and your son,
Julie

Re: Believe my son has Dowager's Hump..help

I agree with Julie. I would definetely not take a chiro's word for it. I don't want to scare you but being a scoliosis sufferer, I would only rely on a scoliosis specialist's opinion. There are alot of chiro's out there that lead people to believe that they can 'cure' scoliosis and that is a myth and I believe that is to make a name for themselves. There is no cure for scoliosis and I only wish that I would have seen a specialist sooner when I was younger. I probably could have avoided the fusion surgery that I had when I did find it.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way and like I said, I don't mean to scare you but it sounds like seeing a scoliosis specialist might be in your son's best interest.

God Bless,
Christina

Re: Believe my son has Dowager's Hump..help

Is sounds like your son may have scheuermann's kyphosis. It is a spinal deformity in which the endplates do not form properly causing servere kyphosis. Scheuermann's kyphosis effects young adolescents during their growing years. I had scheuermann's kyphosis bad, 82 degrees to be exact. I had an anterior and posterior discectomy fusion with instrumentation of T4-T12 and now I have a normal 38 degree curvature. I also agree your son should see a orthopedic surgeon that specializes in the spine and not a chiropractor. Let us know how thing turn out,

Mark
