I really don't know this system so excuse me if I am using it incorrectly. I have not spent the time needed to figure it all out since I have such limited ability to sit at the computer. I was thinking, would it be helpful to have this thread for all of us who have had microdisectomies to share our stories, what has helped, etc....Let me know if so.
bulged disk L5 S1 microdisectomy May 2004
I had my microD (L4/L5) on June 26th 2003. It took until around Jan 2004 for my pain levels to drop to the point where I was not having to take meds on a daily basis. It takes quite a while to for the disc to heal.
I am now basically painfree....not without pain, but I rarely have to take ibuprofen to bring the pain in check.
Before surgery I could not stand for more than 5 minutes a day and was in incredible amounts of pain. I had been under the care of a spine specialist and my PT (a fellow spiney) for quite a few months. One day I came in to see my PT (after 10 days of major pain). He did a couple of tests and was alarmed at the loss of power in my left leg. So he immediately called up my Dr. I was into see the sergeon in two days and in the operating room the next day.
I hope this gives you hope that with time your pain may be reduced to a liveable level.
Had a microdiskectomy on July 1st and can walk again. As far as pain level, it seems the incision site is just now calming down and I can roll over without too much pain. It was hard to sleep.
Walking one hour a day in 30 min increments though slowly so as not to jar. Walking feels good.
Still have pain in buttock area, sometimes down leg, though none in spine Yay! Can walk again whereas before surgery could not. Coughing, sneezing and blowing the nose (from this flu) cause pain in the back, but i think mostly muscles as it's not in the spine.
So much for a 4-6 week recovery. From what I hear, it takes months if not a year or more for the pain to abate, especially if a nerve compression is involved (which I had).
Was it worth it? Yes, to regain use of leg and foot to walk again and to get rid of spine pain. keeping fingers crossed. Hard to be patient. Long recovery for me. Hope you don't.
If you had this surgery, what week are you in and how do you feel?
I just had my second surgery on the L5-S1. I am totally pain free in the leg and buttocks. I only have pain in the incision site. I know it is early, but I am really hopeful that this one will work as well as the first. I re-injured myself 2 years after the first surgery. They both worked instantly. I am one week out from surgery today, I feel great.
Had my micro aug 9 and back feels better than before surgery. A little stiff in morning and gets tired from walking more than 45 min. However, no old burning and aching for no reason. I feel optimistic! Had numbness like frostbite on right leg and foot, kinda nasty. Now it is just a little on part of foot only and seems to be going away. So far so good!
