I was hurt in work on May 20 ,2004 , I injured myself sliding heavy boxes, I noticed a twinge in my back but dismissed it as a pull or a minor strain, I woke up the next morning and the amount of back pain (Lower) was more then i could take, I went to the emergency room that day...I received some valium and vicadin and was referred to a Workmens Comp Doctor, they didn,t examine me at the ER, I was able to see a Company Doctor within the next couple of days...He told me I had a severe lumbar strain and sent me into physical therapy the following day.......which seemed stupid to me, I was hurt and in pain...and right into therapy, I couldnt believe it....anyway the pain got worse with therapy(sphinx, stretching etc..) My physical therapist couldnt believe I had no x-ray ,MRI or anything.....the probing and physical therapy made it all worse....I cried in pain during physical therapy..it hurt that much!
I continued physical therapy for 3 1/2 weeks....pain just intensified!...Finally after 4 weeks I received an X-Ray followed by a MRI..Its conclusion was :mild to moderate facet hypertrofic arthropathy L 3/4 and L4/5 otherwise normal MRI scan of the lumbar spine...2 months later i felt terrible, epideral shots in series of 3 were administered to me....no relief at all, then another series of shots....i have been told everything from nerve inflamation, severe sprain, or nerve problems..from 3 diffrent Workers Comp Doctors...nothing has given me relief I have severe back pain and pressure, lost bowel control on 2 occasions, pain down the back of my left leg , pain in my buttocks, cramping in my legs and feet, from my hips down the pressure is unbearable....my legs have collapsed under me once while at home...I cant sleep or function I have been out of work for almost 5 1/2 months and next week the Workers Comp Insurer wants me to see their 4th Doctor for evaluation...has anyone gone thru this nightmare? I can't work or do much of anything..there has to be an answer somewhere, no?...Ive taken vicadin for pain, valium to relax nerves, neurontin, nortrytyline, naproxen, predizone
my left leg as compared to my right leg shows very little strength and not much reaction to the hammer tap...while the right leg is normal
Please im looking for some input, Id greatly appreciate any advise or support
i am suffering from sever depression and have no history of back problems whatsoever
First off, I am really sorry to hear that you are having such a tough time with everything. I strongly suggest that you get yourself a really good orthopaedic or neurosurgeon. I don't think you have recieved a proper diagnosis and you are not receiving proper treatment. If you are losing control of bowel movements this is not something you want to take your time with, not to mention the pain that you have to deal with everyday. Please find yourself a good doctor and be very aggresive in getting an appt asap. Take care and let me know how you are doing. Kristy.
I don't know what state your in but in NY under workers comp your entitled to go to any Dr you want. Now to address your problems, DON'T SETTLE WITH THEM also get an Att that handles workers comp. With loss of bowel control is a serious thing, find a good othopedic he will prob want a CT and or a discogram to diagnose the problem.he will also get the proper meds for you, this should be also covered by workers comp. I also found keeping copies of ALL medical records and X-Rays turned out to be very benificial to me.
I went thu this about 9 years ago ended up with a failed surgery. All you have to do is don't let them beat you down (i found 8 of 10 were faking it at the hearings) thats why they give you a hard time or try to settle but don't do it untill or if you have a good out come.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my problem. I live in Connecticut. I do have a workmans comp. attorney. I recently received a letter from workmans comp to see another Dr. on Nov. 2. Which I honestly do not understand because I have only seen their doctors and I have done everything they have asked of me.
One of the doctors I have already seen is an Orthopedic specialist and another was a Surgeon. Neither one knows what to do at this point because the MRI showed nothing wrong as far as a disc problem. I know my body and I know something is wrong. I have litterally cried in the doctor office because I am getting depressed about the whole situation.
I am not giving in to these people and I will not return back to work until I feel I am ready and able. I am going to set up an appointment with my attorney. I had a workmans comp. hearing yesterday but for some reason my attorney had cancelled it. He left me a message on my cell phone stating that the doctors are working with me and he didn't feel that the hearing was neccessary at this point in time. Unbelievable!!
Thank you again for your support.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I agree with you. First they tell me one thing and on other days they tell me something else. I am not giving up or giving in to these doctors. I do have an attorney and I am going to set up a meeting with him. I had a hearing with workmans comp yesterday but for some reason he cancelled it. He left me a voice mail on my cell phone saying that he didn't feel it was neccessary at this point because the doctor states I could not go back to work as of yet.
I have seen an Orthopedic specialist and a surgeon. Neither one knows what the problem is because the MRI did not show any disc problem. The thing I don't understand is why haven't they sent me to a Neuro specialist as of yet??
Well Kristy, Thank you again for your support.
I think back problems and depression go 'hand in hand' and hope your doctors have prescribed something to take the edge off. We can always tell when my husband didn't take his medicine cause we want to wring his neck at times. All his behavior is driven by pain...
It sounds to me like you need another MRI. Your's was 2 months old (if I read your post correctly) when the most severe pain hit. Your symptoms of loss of bowel control and the pain you have points to radiculopathy which means that something is impinging on a nerve(s). It could be that the initial injury you encountered moved from a strain to a herniation since your last MRI. PT and injections aren't working for my husband and now they've scheduled another MRI - his last one was in May. Good luck and please keep us posted! You've been having to deal with this way too long.
Thank you very much and yes you are right....back problems and depression do go hand in hand. The doctor gave me Nortriptyline which is a muscle relaxer and an anti-depressent. I take it at bedtime so I can get some sleep. I also have Vicadin to take for the pain but it has gotten to the point where it doesn't help anymore. I agree with you, I think they should also do another MRI. But everything has to clear through workmans comp first. I was at the orthopedic specialist 2 weeks ago and he said that he wanted to refer me to a pain management doctor. What...they think they will just mask the problem with pills and not find out what it is and fix it? I will only put up with this a little while longer. I just want my life back.
I know what your family is going through. My ex-husband had hurt his back in a car accident and we could always tell when he didn't take his meds. But the pain management handed him prescriptions for percocet like they were candy and he got addicted to them and moved on to bigger things. Just please monitor everything they are giving your husband.
When I receive a new prescription, I immediately go online and check it out. It is said that you cannot always trust the doctor.
Thank you very much for your interest and concern. Hopefully things will go well for your husband. Please keep me informed.
I am so sorry you are going through so much with w/c. I am on W/C too. I can only agree w/ what everyone has said. The only suggestion would be to see a Neuro. who is not apart of W/C and to get another MRi. Your back is like a set of domino's. One problen not treated will often lead to a worse problem. As far as seeing a Dr. who is not with W/C, you should be able to put it through your regular insurance (if you have it) and they will go after W/C for payment. At least in VA, you can do that. The other way, if you can afford it, is to pay out of your pocket. Then when W/C accepts responsibility you can submit the bill for reinbursement. As I am sure you have found out, the W/C doctors don't want anything to be wrong w/ you.
So sorry to hear you are going through all this. This is my first time on. I hurt myself at work also 4 years ago next month. You get to the point where you feel like w/c is sending you to so many Dr. just to find one to say there's nothing wrong with you! That in itself is pretty depressing! Unless your dealing with back/leg pain you really can't understand. I am going in on Nov. 2 for my 3rd surgery. My fourth will be on Nov. 4th. I have been through it all. I never had back problems, ever. I am 42 and the mother of 4. I hope and pray for all who have undergone surgery or have a surgery pending. Take care!
Here it is six months since my back injury and still no relief. I have had 3 epidurals, 1 facet injection, have been on 10 different meds, went for an IME, had a MRI and a X-ray, and still no one knows what is wrong with my back! I get more and more depressed. Is it possible that they really do not know what the problem is???????
J, have you had an EMG? If so, did it show any nerve interference? One possibility is a far lateral herniated disc. Instead of rupturing back, the disc ruptures out the side of your disc and can press on nerves outside of the vertibrae. I had this and it took a neurological spine specialist to find it on the MRI. If you have not had an EMG, you should see if they will do one. At least you would know what nerves are being interupted. Best of luck.
Thank you for reading my post. The MRI did not show any disc or nerve problems according to the Ortho Specialist. I went back to him several times. I asked him to do an MRI with the contrast or if I could see a Neurologist and he just blew me off. I contacted my attorney and told him to set up an appointment for a hearing with workmans comp. I have been out of work 8 months now, have done everything this specialist has asked me to do and now I want them to pay for the doctor of my choice. They have let this go on long enough.
Lady J I know how you feel. I have been on W/C for 6 months now. I have jumped thru all their hoops. Did the PT,Epidurals,Went to 3 of their doctors and they all said surgery was the only way to fix the problem. I have 2 herniated discs with 8mm buldge impinging on my spinal cord and 1 disc in my lower back that is ruptured. my right arm is almost dead and pins and needles in both arms and legs and 24/7 pain. They have got me addicted to pain killers. they have to keep increasing the dose becausse they stop working. They fight me over the smallest things like electrode wires for the tens unit they are renting for me. I got a lawyer who is now ordering a IME and my guess is that this one will say what the other 3 said ( Surgery ). The depression gets bad but you have to keep strong and don't let them wear you down. I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope that these people that work for W/C get hurt some day and have to deal with their own BS..
