I have read on numerous threads where people are using xanax when the pain is unbearable. Does this help the pain or help you relax to endure it. I thought this was an anxiety med?

Hi Lisa--Xanax is in the same class of drugs as valium. There are some suggestions (not quite evidence) that they may work in some of the same ways as neurontin. They do effect the same neurotransmitter system. Also, being "relaxed" is usually pain-relieving to a certain degree, and especially if spasm is any part of one's problem.

These are HIGHLY addictive. Xanax won't get you high, but Valium will, so I prefer Xanax for muscle spasms.

I am not sure if they stop the pain or allow you to not care. I know that when I have walked five miles and my hip is killing me, I take a Valium and it stops. I take the Xanax to sleep.

The down side is that, when you try to wean off or to stop taking these, every pain that you ever had in your life comes back to haunt you.

valium and xanax are equally addicting, creating the same kinds of dependency and loss of efficacy without increasing dosage over time. For short term and occasional use, however, they can be very effective.
