It ABSOLUTELY has to do with your disk. I have a herniation at L4/L5 and the most pain I feel is in my hip. Just like the sciatic pain comes from your back - this hip pain is from your back as well.... I pretty much guarantee it ...
Good luck.

Re: can someone pls help me understand why my hip hurts too?

Angel,
This may be unrelated but I have a bulging L5 and arthritis in the L4. But, none of that is causing the pain. I am old enough that it is normal after an injury.

My pain was/is being caused by my SI. It was from the ligament and wrapped from my back to my groin, taking in the hip with it. I had Prolo for that and the ligaments got tighter but I still had pain. The doctor told me that it was bursitis. I say that is hooey.

The pain can be from the disc if a nerve runs through there. I could not find a nerve that ran from the disc to the hip or even close. The sciatic runs to the mid back and down the leg. So, I was at a loss.

This is how I figure mine is going. I was favoring my other side and my whole body was out of whack. My back hurt so bad that I was stetching my back on that side to try to stop the pain. It only worsened it because I was always sitting with my knee up to stretch it out. I quit that. I also set out to walk five miles a day. At first my hip rebeled. One week into the walking it stopped, no more pain in the hip. That ruled out arthritis.

It could all be related. You could be, subconciously, favoring part of your body in order to stop the pain. That tends to atrophy muscles and stiffen them. Ask your doctor if maybe swimming or walking would help.

I also have DDD and bulging discs with annular tears at l4-5 & L5-S1. I have bad hip pain on boths sides and was told by my Neuro that it is from the discs. He said the ligaments become loosened when the spine is unstable. I guess it kinda makes sense, but I totally understand how you feel. The pain is unbearable!

Good luck,

Re: can someone pls help me understand why my hip hurts too?

Your hip pain can absolutely be cause by your back injury. Most likely your L4,L5 bulge is pressing on the branch of the sciatic nerve that connects to the spinal cord at this point. Different branches of the sciatic nerve allow communication between your brain and different parts of your leg. When the nerve is compressed, the signals get distorted and the brain interprets this as pain. I had alot of pain in my hip prior to my surgery as well as pain on the outside of my thigh, outer calf and the first two toes on my foot (big toe and the one next to it).

If you do an internet search on one of the search engines for L4,L5 or herniated disc, you can find diagrams that show which branches control what parts of you leg. Doctors can often tell by where your pain is where your disc injury is.

I hope this answered your question and I hope you are feeling better soon.

Re: can someone pls help me understand why my hip hurts too?

thanks everyone for all the info...i feel so uneducated with all this compared to all of you. what do you take for the pain? or just put up with it? do you think i should see an ortho for this? i have seen the neuro 2x for 2 steroid shots...one in the piriformis muscle and one in the disc space.

This does make a lot of sense. If your discs make your back jiggly and your ligaments are loose, in turn, your pelvis gets out of alignment, then your hip is effected.

Have you asked about your pelvic alignment and your ligaments? The back ligaments are pretty strong, some of the strongest in the body. That is something that you might address with your physician.

As for the nerves in the hip being related to the nerves in the hip, that is a new one on me. I have been asking this question of my doctors for two years now. Each time I am told that it is bursitis, no matter which doctor I ask. I know that wasn't right but even though I had the Prolo, manipulations, chiro, and one shot, the doctors kept telling me that the hip pain was not related to the disc problems that I had. My hip pain is gone. Once I stopped certain positions in the way that I sat, used the inbetween the legs pillow, and started walking five miles a day, it seems to have resolved my problem.

All pain comes from the brain. Alsmith is correct about this. The nerves relay messages via the spinal cord and it interprets it. I am not sure how the sciatic nerve gets involved in the hip pain unless your brain is misinterpreting the source of the pain. I believe that it has more to do with what we do with our body when another part of it hurts. We tend to move our bodies differently to try to protect the parts that are injured.

There is also a band that goes around from the back, hips, pelvis. It is very seldom addressed, even though it can be the source of the pain. Sometimes a doctor has to go in a cut this band. You might also address this with your doctor. I don't recall the name of the band right now.

Re: can someone pls help me understand why my hip hurts too?

Angel, I happen to prefer neuros but that is a personal thing with me. If your current doctor is not doing enough for you, get another doc. Is your ortho an spine specialist. I thought they all were when I first started going to one. He misdiagnosed me and delayed my recovery for about 8 months. The bottom line is if you are not getting help, you can change docs. I do wonder why you are getting injection in your pirfomis muscle. It seem so me that he is unsure of your diagnosis. Is it your disc herniation that is causing your pain or is it Pirfomis syndrome. You usually don't have both. If you are having pain that is consistent with al L4,L5 herniation but he does not think it is a big enough herniation, you may ask about a lateral herniation at L5,S1. This was my problem and docs often miss them. Good luck and I hope you get your answers soon.

Re: can someone pls help me understand why my hip hurts too?

hi alan.....well.....most of my pain is to the right of my lower back...between there and my hip...it would go into spasms....sort of right above my right butt cheek. so he really felt it might be the Pir. muscle going into spasms that was causing the pain (mind you....i had no INJURY that caused any of this. i started with a low back ache one day out of the blue that just progressed and progressed)....SO...that being said we started there....my MRI shows only a slight bulge at L4/5 and no herniation...he didnt feel that it was bulging enuff to start there. so if that first injection didnt work we would go into the disc witht he 2nd one. thats what we did. now...i have had some relief....from both...so who knows...maybe it was both. he is not a spine specialist...he is a very highly rec'd neuro at out rehab pain clinic.

where i am today is i am fine...i feel achy every day...BUT as long as i dont overdue anything...housework, lots of bending, sitting...walking...i feel pretty good. but when i have a long day and do too much i pay for it for a few days...with some pain and spasms.

i have never been to an ortho at all for any of this.

rose
