Painful Spasms in Lower Back

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what is wrong.

I've always had problems with my lower back. In fact, it is so sensitive that any slight pressure is quite painful. However annoying that is, this new thing is worse. Recently I've been having these intense painful spasms in my lower back. They run all the way up my back, and sometimes into my chest. Often they come in clusters, like many spasms at one time. I have trouble walking upright, and have to hunch over. I have a strong suspicion that the pain is due to my posture, which has gone downhill recently. I've been trying to sit straighter, but the pain is still there. It's gotten to a point where I have trouble sleeping.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Meredith

Re: Painful Spasms in Lower Back

Could be a pinched nerve & also muscle spasms in your back muscles. I had sciatica problems & it hurt worse to sit than anything. It can take a while to work out the spasms in muscles. When I had a herniated disc, it took my PT almost 4 weeks to get my muscles to quit spasming. Try icing for 10 mins, then heat, on & off for a total of 5, several times a day, also moist heat will help with the muscles to loosen up.

Re: Painful Spasms in Lower Back

I too have muscle spasms in my lower back, and I am quite sure they are related to my posture. I have scoliosis with flat-back syndrome and like you I walk hunched over.
Last January I began receiving Botox injections in my back for the spasms, and it truly made a difference. The number of injections depends upon how large the area of tenderness is, and both sides of the back should be injected at the same time since Botox can only be given every three months.
Unlike Cortizone injections, there is no pain afterwards, and I cannot complain of any side effects. So if nothing else helps, Botox might be worth looking into.

Re: Painful Spasms in Lower Back

Have you had an MRI? My pain was off and on for years while I had no insurance. And that was one of the first things I got when I did get insurance. A therapist said she didn't know how I was walking around.

I also have been having muscle spasms, last nite I had one & today my whole back & arm are sore like someone ran over me. I had a vertabrae out of position, the chiro got it back in, but she said the muscles are in total spasm & they are hindering it staying in place. I also suffer from depression & anxiety & all my stress goes right to my back..

Re: Painful Spasms in Lower Back

Hi there
It's hard to tell what your problem may be. I have several such as, sciatica, lumbar lordosis and spondylolisthesis with a pars fracture. Your symptoms to me sound very familiar but I also have many other problems/symptoms. I'm sorry but I couldn't begin to try to determine what may be causing your pain because with all of my problems they cause different types of pain and sometimes it hard to differ from what is what. I would strongly suggest that you go to a spine specialist (if you haven't already). First step is going to your doctor and asking for a referral and ask for an MRI, that will really tell you what may be your problem. All I can say is take care of this right away. Don't wait as can and will likely get worse. And this isn't a quick process so the longer you take to make the first appointment the longer it takes for everything else to fall into place, it's been 2 1/2 years for me and I am still waiting for surgery. The important thing no matter what the outcome is, is that you want to always exhaust the non surgical procedures first. I think I'm getting a head of myself here. Just make an appt with your doc and go from there, but be aggressive and proactive, don't take your chances. And certainly don't take no for an answer. I wish you all the luck in the world and please keep us updated. Kristy.
