Question New Here

Hi all. Just a little background on me first. My back pain started after major surgery in 2002. After many mri's ct scans and more than 1 discogram the drs found tears at L4/5 and L5/S1. In Nov last year I had the micro decompression at the l4/5 level. I had no decrease in pain. In March 2003 I had the IDET on the l5/s1. Again no pain relief. 2 months ago my back dr said that there was nothing else he could do for me. I should look into fusion if my quality of life is that bad.

WEll anyway I am relying on a gp right now to prescribe pain meds but I do not want to take them forever. What other options are there for me? What kind of dr should I go to to help me? I am upset that my other dr let me go and I am not sure what to do now!!

Thanks Car

Re: New Here

Hi, so sorry you are having to be here, but welcome . I saw a Orthopedic spine specialist, and was "spared" the micro-d and IDET (I know they work for many -but it seems on here that they fail for more then they help ) , my dr advised going straight for the fusion, as he thought I would end up with the fusion eventually, and that the others would be only delaying the inevitable.

I am sorry your back doctor seems to have "given up". If you feel you have tried everything conservative, you may want to consult with an orthopedist who specializes in spinal issues (keeping in mind that he will likely suggest surgery if all of your conservative therapys have failed, and after the surgies you've already had!!). I would think it is a personal issue of how much you hurt and how much that is affecting your quality of life that determines your next step. Can you ask your GP for a recomendation to a doctor that can help? Does your insurance ahave a specialist referral #?? If you think you can control the pain with meds (vs surgical), maybe a Pain Specialist could help, using epidurals, or other advanced methods, or longer lasting pain meds. Maybe just consulting with different specialist will give you ideas as how to approach your future.
Regardless, I wish you the best of luck in resolving your back issues.

Re: New Here

I agree that you should see an orthopedic spine specialist and that he will probably recommend fusion; he might try some epidurals first if you are agreeable. But seeing as how you have had 2 surgeries, my guess is that the fusion is probably going to be necessary.

Good luck.

Re: New Here

I am not sure but I think the last dr was in Physical and Rehab medicine? I have had so many epidurals I have lost track. I have also had facet joint injections and trigger point injections. So a Ortho Spine Specialist does a fusion? I am on Neurontin 2400mgs Zanaflex 4-8 mgs and I was on Methadone but was just switched to Oxycontin. I have also heard that dr will not fuse if you are too young. My last dr said if I chose fusion with my age (30) It would be more trouble that I am having now. I dont know. I was waiting until after the holidays to deal with this again..lol

Thanks Again
Car
