Question Back Pain and No Reason. Please help. Any Advice is appreciated!

Hi. I am a new member. I have had back pain for 4 1/2 years. I don't remember any injury. I have never been able to get rid of it. I have been to a neurologist, a rehabilitation doc, 3 PT's, 3 Chiropractors, 2 regular doctors, and 2 message therapists. I am at my wits end! I can't handle the depression and pain anymore. I have been through so much. Not one doctor has told me exactly what's wrong. Nothing other than pain killers has helped me and even then it's only temporary. I do pilates and I work out. I have two children that I need to care for. It's hard to pick them up and play with them. I don't go a single day with out pain. I want to be pain free and never see a doctor again. I can't handle it anymore. My pain is in my mid-lower back. I get headaches from it. I often puke because I am in so much pain. Should I see a different doctor again? What do I do? Does anyone know of anything I should look into? Any advice would help. They have done x-rays and nothing shows other than my back goes out alot. I need something to lead me into a hopeful direction. Thank you.

Gina

Have you had MRIs or Cat-scans of the back? Maybe you should try a rhuemy. Maybe they can do some tests and blood work and find your problem. Sorry i dont have any other suggestions. Good luck

X-rays don't show much, if you have a herniated disc, that would show up on an MRI. PT helped me with a herniated disc in the middle of my back & that was 5 years ago, still surgery free.

Find a doc who will do the right tests & find out exactly what IS wrong with your back. It is horribly frustrating to be in pain all the time & not be able to do the things in life we're used to doing.

This is my third time in PT for 3 different back area problems, it has helped me each time.

You talk about therapy anf varios drs but make no mention of having a MRI or ct scan. If your problem is disc related these are good starting points to assees the extent of the problem. I would encourage you to consult a neurologist with the view to having these tests done

Good luck

I empathize. Substitute neck for back and your story sounds like mine. Nothing is wrong via xrays and MRI etc...multiple doctors...and no relief other than from pain meds. I wish you well.

I have never been to one, but have you thought about a pain management specialist?

You should make an appointment with a spine specialist who will order an MRI to see what's going on with your discs. I feel for you, I really do. I know what it's like to be in terrible pain all the time and not know what to do about it. Please get yourself to a doctor, and keep us posted!

I think you need to see an orthopedic spine specialist or a neurosurgeon so that you get an MRI of your back. This sounds very much like a disc problem and that won't be found with x-rays.

Welcome to the board and.....good luck to you.

I agree, you need a MRI and CT scan to find out anything.

Also, if you smoke, quit. It increases nerve pain, and disc breakdown. Coffee and caffeine are also something to avoid. The has been my studys involving smoking and back problems. Weight is also key, if you are overweight the stress on your back is increased.

Arthritis, and fibromialgia (sp?) are also something to check for.

I wish you luck, don't give up, and find a good neurosurgeon.

Thanks everyone for your replys. I have not had an MRI or CT. No doctor has thought to do that. I had electro shock therapy three days ago. It was horrible! I will never do that again. I need to see a better doctor. I also have adhd and manic bipolar. I also have a r**** heart rate. I want to be done with back pain. I have so many medical problems already and I can't take pain meds with the other meds I have to take so I have been camped out on my sofa. Right now I hate life and that's way to sad to say. I am only 19! My life shouldn't be based around my back pain. I can't do anything unless I am on pain meds. And I can't be. I am so fed up. What is life for when you can't enjoy it.,That's my opinion. A friend of mine who has close to the same issue just started seeing a doc she really likes. He has sent her to specialist" and they haven't found anything. Hopefully when I see him tomorrow he will find something on me. Wish me luck. My fingers are crossed.

There is a direct link between bi-polar/manic/depressive and pain. You feel pain differently and process it differently than other people do. Go see a pain specialist and tell them that you are bi-polar. They can help you out. Pain specialists don't only deal with pain meds. They look at the whole picture and then go from there.

Re: Back Pain and No Reason. Please help. Any Advice is appreciated!

My effort to diagnose the cause of my pain from a riding accident 10 months for the 1st problem, 3 years for the 2nd, and 4 years for the 3rd. I certainly understand your frustration! I also had a disc tear that 5 (count 'em, 5) MRIs couldn't find, so had to have a discogram.

So don't settle on the answers you get - take the diagnosis path to the end. Keep insisting on getting what you need...that's the only way you'll be able to find out what's really going on.

Keep giving us details on pain, etc. That may help you shorten your diagnosis timeframe. We don't want you to spend as much time as many of us have had to get this fixed!!!! That's why a lot of us are here is to see if our experiences can help others avoid what we've been through!

I think an ortho/neuro specialist is a good idea, and I recommend not skimping on the "cost" - you get what you pay for. MRIs, whatever is available, is very important, even if it eliminates possible causes. Good luck - we're with you!!!!
