Sciatica Treatment?

Mid November of this year I was in Yoga class, when my instructor tryed to help me with a pose. She didn't mean to but she twisted my back a bit too far. Anyway 3 weeks I had a pain, not excruiating but pain. Pain seem to go away but somehow I must of hurt it again and I aquired Sciatica. ,,,Dr did a test on me too to see where the pain was and said it seemed like an inflamation. Xray looked ok he said (except my lower back is a bit more curved in...)Put me on Medrol for 6 days and it took most sciatica pain away, but I still have that dull ache when I sit for long periods of time and every now and then I feel the pain, but it's not excruiating. He told me to do some stretch exercises, but that seem to make it worse.

What are your experiences?
What works best for this?
Chiro?
PT?

I have had the Sciatica for about 3 weeks now,,,much worse the 1st week, now it's more of a dull ache...

any suggestions would help

Re: Sciatica Treatment?

Lotus, walking and light yoga or pilates are very good. They strengthen your core which helps support the back. It also increases blood flow to your back which can help the healing process. One other possibility is pirfomis syndrome. Your sciatic nerve passes through a muscle called the pirformis before it travels down your leg. Sometimes it can get pinched and cause sciatic pain. If the pain is getting better, that is good news. If it has not improved alot in 6 weeks, I would go back to the doctor to see if you need an MRI. Chances are you are going to be able to get better with just exercise. Good luck!

Re: Sciatica Treatment?

Thanks Alan,,

Yes, the pain seem to go away 3 weeks after the initial injury, but i beleive I sprained it again during sex (to be frank).....then i got the sciatica...

seems almost gone,,,I just got afraid because when I did some stretches my dr gave me it seemed to make it worse.

If this was a herniated disc, would the pain persist?....My dr said that he didn't think it was that when he performed the exam and xray. I could move everything really without pain...this is more of a dull ache. Which is almost gone. Also i live in NYC,,,,right now it's 12 degrees out...i think the cold makes it worse. I walk to work everyday. (which back and forth is about a mile)

I can't wait to go back to yoga, but to be frank, im a little scared to.

Re: Sciatica Treatment?

Acupuncture is very good for butt pain.
There is always an element of piriformis tightening in sciatica and a good acupuncturist will find the muscle and help release the spasm with the needles.
