just to piggyback on previous suggestions...if the mri doesn't show that a disc is pinching your nerve, it could be the piriformis. since that muscle is so deep under the glutes, i've found targeted stretching and lying on a tennis ball to help. the best way to diagnose this after a negative mri result is to have your dr inject you w/an anesthetic at the point where the muscle meets the greater trochanter (femur @ pelvis). if you feel better, then you've figured out what's wrong. i had to do that after my mri showed NOTHING.
