18, active, athletic, sciatica?

I'm 18 years old and I'm pretty sure I have sciatica. I have had it since 8th grade and it's been up and down as far as how bad it is. In 8th grade, I had it really bad in my lower right back but it didn't extend down into my leg yet. I got a whole new bed, and it improved and went away for about 6 months until football season came around, then it was very bad. Every year after football is over it seems to not be as bad but always comes back once the season comes around. I still have it on the offseason just not as much. I'm very worried, because I've read that teenagers shouldn't have it, and it usually just lasts a couple months at most. My mom had it as well. I went to a doctor last year, but he put me in physical therapy, which didn't help at all. I've been playing tackle football since about age 10, so is it possible this brought it on? I'm worried I might have to get surgery or something, and I'm hoping to play college football this coming August.

Re: 18, active, athletic, sciatica?

Hi there,
I would go back to the doctor and ask for an MRI and then maybe a nerve test. That way you will know what is causing you the pain and you can go through some therapy that may help. You do want to catch it early, so I would make an appt tomorrow. Good luck and keep us posted. Kristy.

I agree, not all PT is the same. I've had great PT and also so-so PT. You have to find a good one & then you'll get results!

I think you need to have an MRI done to see what's going on with your spine. Have you seen a spine specialist? That's where you want to start. I wouldn't worry about needing surgery until you've exhausted all other options. It's not anything to mess around with though, and you should make an appt with a spine specialist. Good luck!
