The verdict is in: surgery recommended

Hi all. Long story short - I'm told my surgery would include hemilaminectomy, foraminotomy with facetectomy at L5 - position of compressed nerve root. I'm not sure what all of these things mean other than the facetectomy - I have a general idea. Don't know yet when surgery will be - I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the support - you guys are comforting. :-) Becky

Hi, I don't know what those words mean either. Hope your surgery is successful. Mine is Feb. 28th. I don't know the words for mine, but he is going to fuse 2 disc, put a rod and screws in and a metal cage. I hope it goes well, but I am a little nervous.

I hope surgery goes well. Those are some big words, aren't they? Have no idea what they are either!

Re: The verdict is in: surgery recommended

yep, they are big words! I have a better idea now what they mean. Basically, they will remove a portion of the facet (hope I'm saying this right!) and widen the space where the nerve root goes through. I'm ready. I never thought I would say that - but I am. My only other option at this point is pain management and I just can't imagine going on with the drugs if I can be without them. The thought of being pain free is wonderful - if not a little unbelievable! I'm optimistic! Thanks for responding. Becky
