Electrical bone growth stimulators ~

Hi everybody

Has anyone had a bone growth stimulator? If so, was it internal or external? Did it help fuse you? And could you describe any discomfort you experienced? Sorry for so many questions ~ but I have not used one til now and will be getting one soon

Thanks

Re: Electrical bone growth stimulators ~

One was prescribed for me from my first surgeon, but because I ended up not having him and going emergency with another surgeon, the 2nd surgeon didn't believe in them. He preferred to have the bone do what it naturally was inclined to do - heal itself. Must be he was right... I fused in 4 months... 2 months ahead of schedule.

Re: Electrical bone growth stimulators ~

I had an internal bone growth stimulator with my two level fusion last August. It was removed three weeks ago a little ahead of schedule at my request. It was implanted over a rib, got pressed by my brace, and really irritated the muscles on that side. However it did help fuse my back.

Re: Electrical bone growth stimulators ~

hi ,
i used one after my surgery in august. it was external, like a belt. i wore it for 4 hours at night while sleeping it was not uncomfortable and you don't feel the stimulation. i was told i was fully fused after only just under 4 months and that it probably helped me fuse so fast. good luck to you.

P.S. a little joke,
since i was able to wear while sleeping i nicknamed it the " snooze-n-fuse"

Re: Electrical bone growth stimulators ~

My husband is currently using one. He had surgery in Oct. Like Bob, he sleeps with it. They have not made one for the neck yet, so they gave him a lumbar one and he lays his neck on it, and the next thing that you know, sleep.

His cost $5000 but was covered by WC. It is programmed to run thirty minutes each day. A beep goes off when it is done. A smiley face appears when it is over to remind you that you have already done it that day. It is only programmed for three months time. (not sure about all of them) Once it is done, it is done. Seems like a lot of money for three month's time.

When he started it, he was already fusing. I am hoping that he is fused by time it is done.

take care,
